Thank you for your prayers!

The medication change, cream, powder and prayers (not necessarily in that order) have worked together to visibly improve the rash on Karen's upper torso.  She is not in any pain, however she continues to experience weakness, shortness of breath and fatigue. Karen has not been out of the house for almost a week.  We appreciate those who have come by to visit.

The blog readership has totaled approximately 150 by the response to my "Special Request".  Thanks again to all who sent an envelope, card or note.

As always, we thank you for your prayers for Karen and our family.  God continues to bless in many ways!

Thank you for being a "bright spot" in our day!

We enjoyed our family time this past week. Karen was able to attend the Christmas Eve. Service and was accompanied by all of us except Frank, Megan's husband, whose work schedule delayed his arrival.

The rash and medicating for it slowed Karen down some over the week-end.  There seems to be some improvement.  Please continue to pray for the healing of her skin.  Although Karen is getting weaker, she is still able to walk and do most things to care for herself.

Karen, and family, have appreciated hearing from many of you in recent weeks.  Thank you for being a "bright spot" in our day!

Merry Christmas With Love!

The rash has come forth with a vengeance!  Karen contacted hospice and is taking oral medication along with the use of cream and powder.  It has slowed her down some, but she informed me last night that she wants to do certain things for our meals tomorrow and Sunday and we should let her do them!  Yes, dear.

We continue to get cards, letters and notes......some for thinking of you, others for Christmas, and of course, those resulting from my "Special Request".  There are approximately 130 blog followers that responded.  If you aren't in that count, we would still love to hear from you.  Just write karen'scancercrusade on the envelope.

Thank you to all who read the blog and to those of you who have already responded to my request.  It has been a great encouragement to Karen and our family.

We enjoyed yet another "in home" music concert today.  Thank you to Kim and Kate Anthony for the flute and violin Christmas music, and to Bryan for coming with them.

Karen was also the recipient of a professional foot massage last night.  It was wonderful for her and gave Merilee and me a break!  :)  Thank you for that gift!

If you live in Fayette County, be sure to look in this weeks edition of the Shopper's Guide.  There should be a picture of the "Pink Ribbon" (faculty, staff and students of Fayette Christian School), and an article including information about the picture, an update on Karen, and a post from her blog. This was also a gift to our family and we are very grateful for the opportunity to share Karen's Cancer Crusade in this way.  Thank you so much!

Merilee, Megan, Alyson, and Angela are here. Sally, my sister, arrives tonight. Adam, Bonnie & Carter will be here tomorrow along with Megan's husband, Frank.  If I don't post on the blog for a couple of days, picture me holding our grandson, Carter, because that is what I hope to be doing!

Merry Christmas with love,

Things Death Has Not Changed

We had a friend stop over Wednesday morning followed by a visit from the hospice nurse.  The nurse came to draw blood and give Karen some cream (and later some powder) for her rash.  Pray that it helps.  In the afternoon she was able to ride in the motorized cart at Kroger with the girls (Merilee, Alyson and Angela) helping her shop.  Also, Merilee's sister from Indianapolis came and we went to "The Willow" for our evening meal.  Our entertainment last night was Merilee's sister playing the beginning of several Christmas songs as we tried to guess them.  Lots of fun!  Thank you, Kelleen!

In an earlier blog I stated that "Every Day Is A Good Day!".  Karen plays a large part in making that true. She has set the bar high for facing death with dignity.

She was very pleased that she could give away some of the outfits she had purchased to wear this year for teaching.  One "bargain" sweater still had the tags attached.  Karen has always been a very giving person.  The prospect of death has not changed that.

There has been much physical discomfort (We would call it PAIN!) for Karen since May 2010.  She often remarks that it could be worse and when she compares it to the suffering of Jesus, her Saviour, says it is nothing.  Karen has always been very tolerant of her personal health problems.  The process of dying has not changed that.

Karen loves her family and is looking forward to having them with her for Christmas.  She is diligent in her prayers for each of her children and her husband of 33 years.  Knowing she is going to leave us  has not changed that.

Before departing for Bethesda North Hospital on Dec. 9th, Karen told Pastor Garren, "Forget the eulogy, just preach the gospel!".  "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9. The prayers, cards, letters, notes, blog and facebook comments, phone calls and visits from people are a good indication of the impact Karen has made on our lives and yet she accomplished it with humility. The giving of instruction for her funeral has not changed that.

Thank you, Karen, for making my statement true, "Every Day Is A Good Day!".  Death has not changed that.

Blessed By Your Kindness!

Last night Karen and the girls went to W.A.S.H. (our church ladies fellowship) December meeting.  Just as they arrived home, Merilee, escorted by Linda and Fran made it from Columbus.  Perfect timing!

Karen did some shopping with the girls at Walmart this morning.  It seems like we are home to Santa's elves with much excitement about and wrapping of gifts.

Tonight our neighbor across the street brought a group of young people to our house to sing for us.  They had come to carol for them and she thought we would enjoy hearing them.  They were wonderful!

Every day we are blessed by the kindness of family and friends.  We thank you for every act of love from your cards to your visits and everything in between.

Karen has enjoyed some good days this week and we are hoping it continues through Christmas.  Tonight she discovered a rash in several places.  She will contact hospice in the morning.  Your prayers for this new development are appreciated.

We Love You!

This is going to be a busy week!  I imagine that is true for most of you.  Today at 11am the hospice nurse will make her weekly visit.  At the same time, I have an appointment at a local funeral home.  Later in the day Merilee will arrive in WCH.  We consider her part of our family and she has come from Korea to spend time with us.  On Friday, my sister, Sally, is flying into Columbus.  We expect Adam, Bonnie and Carter to arrive on Saturday.  Megan will be here when she can and hopefully her husband, Frank, will come and complete the family gathering which includes Alyson and Angela who live at home.  Karen and I have been blessed with a wonderful family including those in Iowa who won't be with us this Christmas.  We love you all!

Several friends locally have come by to visit and more are expected this week. This past weekend friends from Wisconsin were here to encourage us.  In a couple of weeks we might have guests from Indiana.  No matter where you're from you have been a blessing to us.  We love you, too!

A highlight of our week will be the Christmas Eve. Service at Fayette Bible Church.  Karen hopes that our family will all be in attendance that night.  If you are looking for a place to worship in WCH that evening come to the church (1315 Dayton Ave. NW) at 7:00pm.  We would love you for coming!

"We are grateful for........"

Karen is able to receive hospice care.  We were pleased to have them come Wednesday for the initial visit. Everyone was encouraged that we are able to get hospice involved while Karen is fairly stable.  Yesterday, a hospice nurse had a follow-up visit with Karen and today we had the SLP come to help us determine what methods of communication we might be able to use, if needed.  For now, Karen will have a nurse coming every Monday at 11am.  We are grateful for Fayette County Hospice!

At our appointment in Lebanon yesterday, we said our "good-byes" to Dr. Budde.  Although Dr. Budde will oversee Karen's care, we will not need to go for further office visits.  We appreciated the attention she gave Karen especially this past week-end in getting her admitted to Bethesda North Hospital so a neurosurgeon could evaluate her condition.  We are grateful for Dr. Budde!

We have been inundated with encouraging messages verbal and written. Several visitors have come, among them Pastor Garren and the 7th-12th grade Fayette Christian School carolers. :) We have been the benefactors of food, flowers, monetary and other gifts.  We are grateful for all of you!

Karen is experiencing more fatigue today.  Nausea and diarrhea continue. We know that many individuals and churches continue to pray for Karen and our family.  We are grateful for your prayers!

Love,
Jack, Karen & family

"And Every Day Is A Good Day!"

THANK YOU!  We have already been blessed with a show of support for Karen and her blog!

Readers have included cards, letters and  personal notes for Karen and our family in the envelopes marked "karen'scancercrusade".  I WOULD LOVE TO TELL YOU ABOUT EACH ONE, but of course that is not possible.  Please know that if you responded to my "special request" our hearts have been touched by your love.  In some cases, you are "friends" we have never met!  In a future blog I will let you know how many of you there are.  :)  Again, thank you so much.

Throughout her illness, Karen has been encouraged by the phrase "One Day At A Time".  I think I'm going to add  "And Every Day Is A Good Day!".  You may think that is strange when the medical facts indicate cancer of the brain will soon end the life of  the person who means the most to me on earth. That is exactly the point.  I am beginning to live with the mindset that today could be her last. Oh, that we could do this before it were true!

We had our final appointment with Dr. Budde today.  I told her that it is too soon for me to let go of Karen, but I know she is going to heaven and someday I will be there too!  If I'd thought of it I would have added that God has made that possible for us.  "For God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8   Thank you, Jesus.

I HAVE A "SPECIAL REQUEST"!

When Karen was diagnosed with breast cancer she thought a blog would be a good way to keep people informed of her progress.  Our son-in-law, Frank, helped Karen get it set up.  She did the first few posts  herself  before the perforated stomach ulcer complications made it impossible.  Megan did it a few times, but most of the postings have been from my perspective.  At times it has been a challenge to know what to write or how to write it.  (My family thinks it takes me way too long!)  It has really been good for me to put my thoughts in writing. We thank you for taking the time to read them.

I HAVE A "SPECIAL REQUEST"!  We have no way of knowing how many of you there are.  I thought it would be an encouragement to Karen if she could know the success of  her "blog" idea before she dies.  This is my suggestion:  Take an envelope.  Put a stamp on it.  Adress it to:  Karen Harris   1297 Dayton Ave. NW    Washington Court House, Ohio     43160.    Write "Karen's Cancer Crusade" somewhere on the envelope or on a slip of paper that you put in the envelope.   If you want to identify yourself on the return address or write a note that is great but you don't even need to do that.    I would just like her to have some idea how many people have taken this journey with us.

With love and thanks,
                              Jack

The Cancer Crusade Continues..........

Karen had a great day shopping with Megan in Chillicothe!  We had not celebrated my birthday Friday so we went out for supper this evening, too.  As they say about very active children, "She should sleep tonight!".

Appointments: Wednesday- Hospice at our house
                         Thursday- Dr. Budde in Lebanon

After Karen was diagnosed  on Oct. 4th, we talked about her wishes and how we would plan for her death.  At that time, we had my sister help us purchase burial plots in our hometown of Rockwell, Iowa. We are continuing now with some other details that I would like to share with you. (It is much easier right now than it will be later.)  There will be visitation and a funeral service at Fayette Bible Church in Washington Court House, Ohio.  A few days later, there will be a memorial service in Rockwell with burial immediately following.

In the meantime, we continue to pray for God's perfect will for Karen.  Miracles do happen!

"Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen."  Ephesian 3:20-21

"We Will Be Forever Grateful."

Karen slept very well last night.  She was able to attend the cantata at church this afternoon.  Megan came over and will spend the night.  She and Karen have a shopping trip planned for tomorrow.  Karen told me this morning she is going to go while she can!  We were able to Skype with Adam and Carter this afternooon.  It was good to see Carter and visit with Adam!

Karen was showered with a dozen roses this afternoon by each of the Sanchez children. We were blessed with meals given to us from our church last night and today. We have been contacted by friends from Wisconsin to Korea who want to come visit.  Many facebook statuses have requested prayer for Karen and churches have had special times of prayer.  Your personal expressions of concern, the blog comments, phone calls and greeting cards have been a continual encouragement to us.

As Karen will not be receiving further treatment for the lesions (tumors) in her brain, they will continue to increase in size. As the largest lesion at this time grows, it will affect the flow of spinal fluid.  When it stops the flow completely she will not survive.  The neurosurgeon informed us that this would be a quicker and less painful death than most cancer patients experience. Because the growth of the other lesions will cause much physical difficulty, Karen is hopeful that God will bless in her death as much as he has in her life.

I don't know that I will post daily blogs, but as I know several of you read it for updates and specific prayer requests I will try to do it on a regular basis.  We thank each of you for your prayers, love and support since the inception of "Karen's Cancer Crusade".  We will be forever grateful.

Love,
Karen, Jack & family

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1

We were able to get the disc of Karen's brain MRI in the neurosurgeon's hands this afternoon.
There are too many cancerous lesions in her brain to treat any one of them and be successful.  His recommendation is for Karen to be at home with family under Hospice care for the remaining weeks of her life.

We know you will continue to pray for Karen and our family.  It means much to us.  There will be difficult days ahead but we don't face them alone.  "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." Psalm 46:1

Admission to Bethesda North Hospital

Karen had her MRI done at 2pm today in Wilmington.  I wasn't feeling well so Angela took her to the appointment.  They had just walked in the door at home when Dr. Budde called Karen's cell.  Karen disappeared for awhile and came back in tears saying that Dr. Budde wanted to talk to me.  More complications with the brain tumors.  They are growing again, one of them in a "bad place" to use Dr. Budde's terminology.  She told us we needed to get Karen to the emergency room at Bethesda North Hospital in Cincinnati.  This would be the quickest way to get the attention of a neurosurgeon which she felt Karen needed to have evaluate her condition.  There is a buildup of fluid that if not taken care of is a potential threat to her well-being.  A shunt might be necessary and/or some aggressive radiation treatment.  Karen is in room 5322 for now. Alyson is staying the night with Karen.  Angela and I came home and Megan went back to Dayton. We didn't have a disc of the MRI this time so they are going to try and get it tomorrow morning or do another MRI at the hospital so the neurosurgeon can determine what course of action is most appropriate.

God does answer prayer.  This may not seem like a good situation to you, but it is what God knows is best for us right now.  When Dr. Budde was talking to me on the phone this afternoon she apologized for not being able to give us this news in person.  I told her we understand and after all we've been through we try to be gracious when hearing these unfavorable reports.  She said, "Jack, I think you two do a better job at that than I do."  What a testimony to our God who comforts us and gives us strength during difficult times. Thank you all for your prayers!

P.S. Karen called me after we got home.  She is very pleased with her hospital room and the care she is getting.  She is also thankful for her family.  We love you, Karen.

The Results Are In.......

I will imitate Dr. Budde in delivering today's report.  There is no cancer in the liver. (She always begins with the positive!) The cancer in the lungs is growing.  Karen will be starting an IV of chemo in the office in Lebanon on Thursday.  It will be administered once a week for the next 2 or 3 weeks if tolerated. That means blood work every week. The returning symptoms of tumor growth in her brain require a trip to Wilmington tomorrow for another MRI.  If there is one tumor causing these symptoms, they may give it a jolt of radiation and/or put Karen back on steroids.

Karen is a real trooper. When asked how she reacted to the news today my response was, "I think she just rolls with the punches."  When I asked Karen about it tonight she said that was right.  :)

This was our pastor's encouragement today, via text message, "God's will is always perfect and His comfort is complete.  How wonderful God is to allow us to see His working in our lives and circumstances."  Our family continues to trust God for ALL things.  THANK YOU for your prayers!  And THANK YOU for reading today's blog.

Love,
Jack & Karen

Thank You for Remembering Karen in Your Prayers!

Well, Thanksgiving has come and gone.  We enjoyed having my sister and Karen's mom with us for the week.  On Wednesday, we were surprised by the appearance of Adam, Bonnie and Carter!  Megan, Alyson and Angela, as well as, Frank's mom were also at our Thanksgiving Day meal on Thursday.

Karen has been coughing for some time, however some other cold symptoms have appeared and the cough has worsened.  Right now she is medicating over the counter.

One more day of chemo pills before the 7 days off.  She looks forward to not having so many pills to take twice daily!

Next week Tuesday is the scheduled scan of chest and abdomen.  An appointment with Dr. Budde follows on Thursday.

Thank you for remembering Karen in your prayers!

We Have Much to be Thankful For......

We have much to be thankful for.......Karen's mom and my sister arrived from Iowa Sunday afternoon and will be with us for Thanksgiving, Karen received the 2nd of two recent calls from Dr. Budde with good news (the arm/shoulder does not need surgery and the tumors in her brain have shrunk), a beautiful floral centerpiece was delivered today from Karen's sisters & their families, and we have a 19 pound ham defrosting in our refrigerator!

We are most thankful for the love of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.  Without His sacrificial death on the cross for the forgiveness of our sin, we would have no hope for life eternal.  "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16

Happy Thanksgiving to you, our family and friends. We love you!  Jack, Karen, Adam, Bonnie & Carter, Frank & Megan, Alyson & Angela

No Results Today

No results yet from today's MRI.  A comparison with the first MRI needs to be made.  We are certain the tumors have shrunk as Karen's symptoms have improved.  We might find out something next week.  Karen is on her second round of the chemo pills as of yesterday.  The scheduled December scans will show how effective they are in shrinking the tumors in her chest and lungs. We are thankful that her side effects have been minimal.

Karen is sleeping much better!  She is still nursing the cough, though.  Your prayers are appreciated.

So Much to Keep Track Of!

Karen had several questions for Dr.Budde today at her scheduled appointment.  She seemed satisfied with the answers. There are lots of things to keep track of when you are sick!  The insulin seems to be doing the job for the sugar issue.  The bloodwork from yesterday showed a need for Karen to start taking potassium pills again.  Karen is a bit anemic but they are waiting for the next round of bloodwork to determine what to do about that.  Dr. Budde confirmed that the MRI of the brain should be done Thursday.  Karen will also have an x-ray of her right arm/shoulder.  It has been bothering her since last week.  The CT scans of the chest and abdomen have been scheduled for December 6th and the next appointment with Dr. Budde will be on December 8th.

Karen has a bothersome cough and has requested that you pray for that to improve. (She doesn't like the taste of the medicine!)  :)

As you know, we are thankful for your prayers and encouragement.  God provides just what we need every day.  You are all a blessing to us!  Love, Jack, Karen & family

Our Week At A Glance

Karen needed some bloodwork done so we made the trip to Wilmington this morning.  This afternoon she decided to discuss her sugar situation with a healthcare professional.  She is on a low dose of insulin for now.  Tomorrow is the appointment in Lebanon with Dr. Budde.  An MRI of the brain is scheduled for Thursday.  We'll post the results!

Have A Great Weekend!

Karen had some things going on today of  a physical nature. Her blood sugar was high so she was working on getting that under control.  A headache and more frequent trips to the bathroom were on the list as well.  Even though this wasn't her best day, she was still doing well compared to the beginning of last month and a lot better than she could be if she was experiencing more side effects from the treatment.  God answers prayer!

I will not post anything new until Monday night unless something happens over the weekend (good or bad) that we are not anticipating.

Thanks again for reading the blog.  It is an encouragement to us when you make reference to it in conversation or cards and letters.  We love you all.  Have a great weekend!   Karen & Jack

Prayer is Important to God!

Many prayers are being said for Karen, some at specific times and lengths of time around the clock.  We know that God never sleeps nor slumbers.  We know that Jesus is continually making intercession to God for us in heaven.  We also know that the Holy Spirit prays for us better than we can pray for ourselves. Many verses in the Bible make reference to our own prayers and the prayers of others for us.  That is how we know prayer is important to God!  When we share Karen's story with people their first response is usually, "I/we will be praying."  In a past blog, I shared my understanding of how God might answer these prayers...remission, a miracle of healing, or physical death.  I want to share parts of a note Karen received today that expresses these thoughts in a similar way.

"I was listening to Moody radio Sat. & a woman who has a serious illness was being interviewed.  She said she absolutely knows she will be healed & that made me prick up my ears.  She continued on to say that she'll either be healed on this side or the other side and either will work for her!"  The note went on to say, ".....I know you already know things will be great in heaven, but wanted to remind you.  I'm still praying for a TOTAL HEALING MIRACLE (for you on THIS side) that would glorify God."

We know prayer is important to God!  We don't know yet if Karen will be healed here, but we do know that someday Karen WILL BE HEALED in heaven.  "To God be The Glory!"

KEEP PRAYING!

Tuesdays aren't all bad! (See earlier blog)  Karen was able to accept an invitation to go out for lunch with a friend today.  Later this afternoon, Frank & Megan came for a visit. We enjoyed our evening meal at home with Alyson, Angela, Frank & Megan. Those of  you on facebook may have seen Kyler Conn in his handmade Asian hat dedicated to "Karen's Cancer Crusade".   Kyler is one of the 4th graders at Fayette Christian School.  There are many more like him.  The faculty and students at FCS have remembered Karen in many ways from prayers, cards & letters to the wonderful photo they presented her taken of themselves in the form of a pink ribbon.  To all our friends at FCS, your kindness means so much!  And to everybody, everywhere.....KEEP PRAYING!
Love you!  Jack & Karen

Thank You All!

Karen has one more day on the chemo pill and then 7 days off before the next 14 day round.  She has certainly done well so far.  The treatment and your prayers have given her strength for each day.  She was able to go to Chillicothe Friday with Megan and Angela.  Saturday afternoon Karen and I enjoyed a "mini-concert" by the Craig family right in our own living room.  It was wonderful!  Thank you, George, Laura and family for your visit.  That evening we attended a fun "Young At Heart" party at church.  Sunday morning we attended church, as usual.  Karen received a "PINK" Bible from a friend on Sunday. This Bible is a special publication including pages written by women who have had breast cancer.  She was also given a beautiful bouquet of flowers from a family in our church.  We appreciate the thoughtfulness of so many since Karen's diagnosis on October 4th. Thank you all!

A Great Week!

It was one month ago today that we were told Karen had tumors in her brain.  The symptoms have all but disappeared.  The radiation and steroids have done their job.  She is still not experiencing most of the possible side effects from the chemo pills.  Karen had a great week.  What a blessing!

There has been some confusion on scans and MRI scheduling.  It will be cleared up on Nov. 15th when we see Dr.Budde.  It will be interesting to find out how much the tumors in the brain have shrunk. Maybe they will be completely gone.  The doctors have said that would never happen but we are leaving it up to God.

God Hears Your Prayers.

Karen slept better last night.  She is not experiencing uncomfortable side-effects right now.  Life is somewhat "normal"!  God hears your prayers.

"Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen."  Ephesians 3:20-21

Doing Well!

We had a good visit at the cancer center today.  Dr. Levick was not there so Karen saw Dr. Grass, the radiology oncologist she had for her chest radiation earlier this year.  She was able to ask several questions and was satisfied with the answers.  Then we had an appointment with the social worker, Michelle, who walked us through the living will and medical power of attorney forms.

Although she is doing well so far on the chemo pill, Karen is still having difficulty sleeping more than 2 hours at a time.

Thanks for keeping us in your prayers!

A Good Day!

Karen is not able to drive but she likes to get out of the house when she can.  I took her to visit a friend this afternoon for an hour.  Later in the day she went to the store with Alyson & Angela. She seems to have more energy now, although I know that sometimes she pushes herself to do things around the house.  Her voice is stronger and she is also able to write better. We are thankful for this improvement. Keep praying!

Tomorrow we have an appointment with the radiology-oncologist and the social worker at the cancer center at Wilmington.

Thanks to all who read the blog.  Many of you have mentioned it. We appreciate your interest in "Karen's Cancer Crusade"!

"Counting Our Blessings"-Your Love & Prayers!

Karen enjoyed our trip to Beavercreek on Saturday stopping at several stores and eating out, of course.  She attended church yesterday morning as is our custom.  Today she was able to shop on her own at the local Walmart while I was getting my eye exam there.  We have almost everything we need now for our Thanksgiving meal!  I picked out a 19 pound ham at ALDI.  If you are eating alone for Thanksgiving, come on over......there will be plenty!!!!!

We received confirmation of Medicaid coverage today.  That was a great encouragement to Karen.  They had cancelled her coverage last June because she was thought to be cancer-free.  It will be retroactive to that time.

God continues to answer your prayers.  Pray for the chemo pill side-effects to be minimal.  Also, no infections to complicate her condition. We want to avoid hospitalization as it would mean driving to Cincinnati unless it is an emergency situation that would require us to stay locally.   We have an appointment with the radiology-oncologist Wed. afternoon in Wilmington.  Hopefully it will just be a routine office visit.

We have received mail and phone calls from all over the country....actually world. We can't say "Thank You" often enough for the outpouring of love and prayers for our family.  The other day our mail delivery lady, whom we know personally, asked if it was Karen's birthday (so many packages & cards).  I shared the news of Karen's cancer with her.  She offered her prayers and that of the church she attends, as well.  That is so typical of what we are told when people find out about Karen's condition.  What a blessing to have so many people praying for us!  We thank God for each of you.

With grateful hearts,
Jack, Karen & family

Have a Great Week-end!

Karen made a couple of Christmas cards and the pumpkin bars today.  Alyson & Angela came home from volleyball tournaments and our outing tonight was to Wendys!  Tomorrow, we are meeting Megan for lunch in Dayton.  Seems like all we do is eat!  The radiation and chemo pills might affect Karen's tastes & appetite so I am glad for these "outings" now! :)

I will not blog again until Monday.  Have a great week-end!

Blessed By Your Thoughtfulness

Karen had a fairly good day.  She talked about making some cards for Christmas so we looked through some stamps.  She wants to make pumpkin bars sometime so we made sure we have all the necessary ingredients for those.  She wanted her "daily outing" to be our evening meal at a local restaurant so we went there tonight.

Besides the hair loss and fatigue, she has sores in her mouth and the skin between her fingers is sensitive. Time will tell what other side affects she might have from the chemo pill.  Even though treatments were completed, the radiation is still active for a couple more weeks as well.

We have been so blessed by the thoughtfulness of family and friends. Today was no exception. Our sincere thanks to all of you.  Jack, Karen & family

A Brief Note

Just a brief note.  First day of chemo pills went well.  Side affects are not immediate so Karen should have a few good days.  Maybe more if God wills it.  :)  Karen went to church tonight and was able to make the short walk home with Alyson by her side.

"Hopeful For A Time!"

Ok......lots of things to report from our visit with Dr. Budde this morning.

First, she asked Karen how she is doing in regard to the symptoms she had before treatment.  Karen responded that she is doing better.  Dr. Budde also told BOTH of us that should we need medication for depression or anxiety it is available.  Karen looked at me and said, "He cries more!"  Undeniably true, but along with trusting God, my tears are good medicine for me. Hugs help, too!  Karen also declined medication at this time.

There are several tumors in her brain and lungs, however we were told that size and number do not matter.  The cancer metastasized from Karen's breast and there are several options for treating her type of cancer.  As you know, Karen completed the whole brain radiation last week.  On Nov., 17th, she will have another brain scan to see how it compares to the original scan.  In the meantime, she is starting the chemo pill, Xeloda, tomorrow.  If she tolerates the treatment, it will continue for 14 days.  Then after a week off, begin again.  If she does not tolerate it, meaning side effects are unmanageable, they will scan her lungs on the 17th also and switch medication. Though a terminal condition, the outlook for Karen is hopeful for a time if she responds well to treatment and experiences no other complications.

As always, we appreciate your prayers for Karen and our family. Your many caring gestures touch our hearts deeply.
Love to all!  Jack, Karen & kids

"One Day At A Time" With Thanksgiving

Saturday, Karen wanted to go to the Amish store not far from us that sells apple fritters.  We picked up a few other items, including a pumpkin that is on the front deck waiting for someone to carve him!
Sunday, Karen was able to go with us to church for the morning service.  She has lost most of her hair so the all too familiar wigs have become part of her fall wardrobe.

Today, the local paper published the picture of the Fayette Christian School staff & students in their pink ribbon formation.  It was front page news!  :)  We appreciate the support of our "school family".

Tomorrow, we have a morning appointment in Lebanon with her oncologist.  Karen is also to begin taking the chemo pill and cutting back yet again on the steroid medication.

Continue to pray for Karen to sleep better.  Also for side-effects of the chemo pill to be tolerable.

We are encouraged daily by your prayers, cards, messages, phone calls and visits.  As you can tell by the format of today's blog, we are taking things "One Day At A Time" giving thanks for each day that we have.

"Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."  I Thessalonians 5:16-18

A Special Gift

Karen receives cards every day from family and friends.  They are kept in a basket nearby and are available when words of encouragement are needed.

Today Karen received a special gift! The faculty, staff and students of Fayette Christian School, WEARING PINK, stood in the form of a ribbon for a photo. It is titled "Karen's Hope".  On the back is an explanation that says in part, "In a recent note Karen wrote to the students she made the remark that 'you (the students) are my Hope.' While the students may be Karen's earthly Hope, Karen has a far greater Hope and that Hope is in the Lord."

Psalm 31:24 "Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD."

Hair Cut Today!

Karen got her hair cut short today as the hair loss side-effect came on with full force.  She still looks good!  And of course we all know that "bald is beautiful" so that won't change her appearance either.  She had enough energy to make chicken noodle soup this morning and work some in the kitchen plus play a game of Phase 10 after supper!  Karen has not been sleeping well at night.  Your prayers for that to improve are appreciated. Thank you!  P.S. According to our scale, the plan is working; my weight is up! :)   Jack

We Appreciate Your Kindness!

Karen enjoyed a visit from a friend this morning and we all enjoyed the cinnamon rolls she brought!  The daily trips to Wilmington have ended.  It was nice having that time with Karen often getting lunch before heading home. (I think this is really just a plot to fatten me up!) Karen wants to get out while she feels like it.  Tonight she went to church with us.  I think she is planning a trip to Chillicothe on Friday with Megan.  She said something about Christmas shopping. She has always been good at that and enjoyed it a lot.  Karen's hair is thinning so you may see her sporting one of her wigs the next time you see her. They look so natural that she had many compliments on her hair when wearing them before!
Karen is weak and tired so most of the time her recliner is a comfortable haven for her.  If you are near 1297 Dayton Ave. feel free to stop by and say "Hi!".   P.S. Just had fresh apple-walnut cake brought to our door so I know there is a conspiracy going on! :) As always, we are appreciative of your kindness to us expressed in so many ways.   Jack, Karen and family

Final Radiation!

Last of the radiation today.  Karen got to keep the face mask used during treatment. If she were a 'trick or treater it would work for a scary costume!  The chemo pills were delivered to the house today.  She will have an appointment with Dr. Budde next Tuesday before beginning that regimen.  We were blessed with a meal from friends tonight that included chocolate cake and also an apple pie from another friend.  Karen and the girls think I need to gain weight so they appreciate your help with that! :) Also, your prayers, cards, messages, visits, in person inquiries, etc. are all very encouraging.  Thank you for every expression of love and care for our family.  Jack for all

One More Radiation Treatment!

Today we saw Dr. Levick, radiology oncologist.  She confirmed that Karen is responding to treatment as her symptoms have improved.  She will taper off the steroid each week until she no longer needs it unless symptoms reappear and then she will go on the last dosage that was effective for her.  Results of the MRI did not reveal any surprises.  All the cancer in her brain was visible on the CT scan.  Karen and I had discussed trying to go see Adam, Bonnie & Carter in Chicago sometime between Karen's last radiation treatment tomorrow and beginning the chemo pill next Tuesday but Dr. Levick didn't think she would be strong enough to go that far so we are heeding her advice and staying in Ohio.                 Jack

Weekend Off

Taking time off from the blog unless we have something to report.  Thanks again for your love and support.  In combination with our faith in God it is what sustains us from day to day.

"THANK YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS"

Made the usual trip to Wilmington for radiation and then over to Lebanon to sign some paperwork.  While there we stopped at a quaint old ice cream parlor for lunch. A nice change from "fast food"!  Received a phone call today from a former pastor who lives in Wisconsin.  It is good to hear from those of you who call, visit, text, send cards or comments, etc. (Some of you have had trouble leaving comments on the blog.  I just choose "anonymous" and it posts.)  Karen is weak and showing the signs of fatigue that come with her treatment. She is not in any pain and writes and walks better now.  Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.   Jack

THANKFUL FOR YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT!

Karen had the regular radiation today followed by an MRI. The MRI was a new experience for Karen but she said it went well. The MRI provides a more detailed picture than a scan.  Again this is for future reference in her treatment.  The steroid medication Karen has been on since last Tuesday will be tapered off starting tomorrow.  Four more radiation treatments Thur.-Fri. and next Mon.-Tues.  Karen received several cards today and some phone calls. A family who have children in our Christian school brought a wonderful meal for us tonight.  We continue to be encouraged by your hugs, well-wishes and prayers. In a few minutes we will be leaving for church and Karen plans to go with us. One of  Karen's calls today was from a friend of our family who also has cancer.  She shared this quote with Karen  "Live your life, not your diagnosis.".  Good advice!

"NO MORE TUESDAYS!"

Tuesdays have become our least favorite day of the week, right Megan! :) One week ago today we were given the news of Karen's brain tumors.  Today, we were told there is cancer in her chest and lungs.  Suggested treatment is a chemo pill.  We have another appointment with Dr. Budde two weeks from today to confirm that. Until then, the "whole brain" radiation will continue.  The last radiation treatment will be one week from today.  I asked a question of Mike at Karen's radiation appt. today and he gave us a very good explanation of how the radiation is working against the cancer cells in her brain.  He also brought me back where the treatment is administered and explained the process.  He and I then left the treatment room to view computer screens showing Karen receiving the actual treatment.  The whole amazing process takes just a few minutes.  As the radiation continues to work weeks after treatment, the side effects do too.  In time, she will lose her hair, experience burning of  her skin and be very tired. Karen is handling all of this very well.  She believes in the power of prayer and we literally have an "army" of people praying for her!  A friend from our church organized a "24" hour prayer vigil for Karen.  If you want to participate, contact the church at (740) 335-7495, email jackdharris@fayettebible.org , send me a facebook message or ask about it when you comment on the blog and we'll sign you up with your own special time for prayer!  Tomorrow Karen will have her regular radiation followed by an MRI.  They have requested that for a base-line if further treatment is given down the road. Well, I think we are all in agreement that there be "NO MORE TUESDAYS!" At least not like these :) "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24    With love, Jack & Karen

HOW TO PRAY?

Two scans today. Results tomorrow.  We will be in Lebanon, OH, for an appointment with Dr. Budde at 10:45am.  We have only talked with her on the phone since last Tuesday's diagnosis and are looking forward to this office visit.  We will post today's scan results and report any other information that might be helpful to you as you pray for Karen. It has been difficult for me to know how to pray or to suggest to others how to pray.  Of course, we want God's will most of all.  But we don't really know what that is.  We learned today that although the cancer is only expected to shrink at best, it could "sleep" or be in remission for a time.  That would be good.  Sometimes God completely heals a person from physical illness.  That would be great!  At other times the disease results in death.  Some people think death is bad.  For Karen, that would not be true.  As a college student, she realized her condition as a sinner before a holy God.  She personalized John 3:16 by putting her name in the verse like this...."For God so loved (Karen), that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  The Bible clearly says you can know that you have eternal life.  "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God: that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."  I John 5:13  My conclusion?  "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."  Proverbs 3:5-6

Day Four

A good day that included a visit from a friend who brought roses, Pastor bringing handwritten letters from the 7th-12th graders at Fayette Christian School with messages of prayer support, scripture verses and thoughful words, a special card from the 11th and 12th grade, a visit from Karen's prayer partner, Megan coming over from Dayton, attending an FCS volleyball game, encouraging words from friends and family, and a rousing game of Phase 10! Memories of days like this will be precious to us. Karen got a call from the person responsible for Medicaid enrollments. She let Karen know that she will be reinstated retroactive to her tumor diagnosis. A huge blessing! We will probably take the weekend off from the blog unless something significant happens. We would appreciate your prayers for the results of the scans on Monday. Prayer changes things!
Love to all from Jack, Karen and family.

DAY THREE

Appointments were made this morning for more scans in Wilmington and an office visit in Lebanon with Dr. Budde. The scans on Monday morning will show if the cancer has spread anywhere else. On Tuesday morning we will be able to talk "face to face" with Dr. Budde. She was very helpful over the phone on Tuesday and Wednesday. We found out yesterday that Dr. Budde called the radiologist and social worker at the Boyd Cancer Center Tuesday evening when she found out about Karen's tumors. Needless to say, they were expecting us to be there on Wednesday! We are so thankful for the love and care of so many. I can't tell you the number of people who have let us know they are praying. We know that Karen is being put on "prayer lists" all over the world. Your prayers are a tremendous encouragement!
On a personal note, this morning after spending some time in the bathroom crying, I ended up sitting in the living room with Karen. She said, "Why are we crying!" :) Sometimes our tears are difficult to explain, but we know the one who always understands our sorrows. "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." Hebrews 4:15-16

Day Two

Wow, it hasn't even been 24 hours since we were told about the tumors. Living a "normal" life can change so quickly! We were able to talk with Dr. Budde again this morning. She answered our questions and again STRONGLY encouraged us to see the radiologist TODAY! We listened and were at the cancer center in Wilmington by 11am. We took the disc with the pictures of Karen's brain scan with us. Neither of us wanted to look yesterday, but we were able to view it today. There are several tumors, which makes surgery impossible. The tumor of greatest concern is on the cerebellum which is why she is having trouble with her balance. Swelling caused by the tumors is an issue in other areas of her brain as well. Along with the steroids, the Whole Brain Radiation should shrink the tumors however they will never completely go away. The goal is to relieve the symptoms and give Karen some quality of life. As is true for all of us, only God knows how long that life will be. These tumors are a result of the breast cancer so she will need to have additional scans done to see if there is cancer anywhere else in her body. Karen had her first of 10 treatments today. Radiation appointments are at 1:15pm daily M-F. We do appreciate your prayers for Karen.

Karen's Cancer Crusade Continues!

Karen has been experiencing some unusual symptoms for a little over a week; difficulty writing, getting words out, dizziness and nausea. She had a CT scan today that revealed two cancerous tumors in her brain. We think they told us there are several smaller ones, too. When you receive news like this it is hard to remember everything. She is on medication already and will start full brain radiation this week at the cancer center in Wilmington. This was a very unexpected turn of events! Karen handled the news with less emotion than I did. No surprise there, huh!?! :) She is a very strong person with an unwavering trust & faith in God. Please join us in praying for what God knows is best for Karen.

June 11,2011

Hard to believe that one year ago yesterday was my first chemo treatment. What a difference a year makes.
Here's an update. Dr. S removed my port Thursday. Everything went well. I didn't even get sick from anesthesia and he put glue on the wound so I can go swimming Monday. I am so thankful. Looking forward to teaching at the school with Al and Ange. Should be a fun year. I told Pastor Garren this is my dream job -- teaching Math! Hope all is well with everyone. Love to all who still look at this blog once in awhile!

May 19th, 2011

Just a quick update. Had mammogram Monday, May 16th and saw Dr. B today for 3 month check. Mammogram was normal -yippee! and she said I could get the port out! So have appt with Dr. S. tomorrow to set that up. Since our insurance will be ending it is good timing. I don't know if anyone still checks this _ but a big thank you to all my prayer warriors. I appreciate you so much. Girls graduated from college May 7th and we will all be employed in Aug. I will be teaching Math at FCS so am excited about that and we go to disney world soon for a family vacation. That will be fun since we have had very few if more than oneof those and then will be going to Il and IA one week in June or July. Next check up is August 9 so will give an update then and maybe after port is removed. Thanks again and loveto all!

March 1 update

Feb. 16th had followup with Dr. Budde. My bloodwork was great she said. I am no longer anemic! Since I was anemic before the whole thing started we decided it was probably the ulcer at that time and the chemo just made it worse. The magnesium is slowly coming up. As far as Dr. Budde and Dr. Grass are concerned there is no cancer left in my body!
However, because my cancer is triple negative Dr. Budde said they need to keep an eye on me. My next appointment is in May after my mamogram. Wow, 3 whole months - what am I going to do? Ladies have you had your mammogram yet? My advice is don't put it off!
Sad news is that Dr. Budde will be leaving the cancer center March 18th due to politics. I plan on sticking with her though and will follow her to Lebanon.
I will go to the cancer center the end of March for a port flush since it needs flushed every 6 weeks and they want to leave it in a year just in case.
Well, the news was so good Angela and I decided to take off for Iowa and surprise Grandma, Aunts, sisters and inlaws. Also got to see an old teacher-softball coach and visit with a friend I hadn't seen for probably 20 years. It was a good time. I got lots of hugs.
We had great traveling weather and it was great fun. I appreciate Mom coming so much when I was down and out and wanted to surprise her to pay her back a little! mY BURN was peeling and pretty owie when we left but it is surpising how the body heals so quickly. I now only have a little spot left and Go to Dr. Grass Monday, March 7 for a followup after radiation.

As always I appreciate all your prayers. I will probably just update once a month unless something surprising happens. Love and a hug to all. Karen
Remember to rejoice today that God loves you as his own child and wants what is best for you.We are so blessed.

HAPPY 22ND BIRTHDAY TO ALYSON AND ANGELA ON MARCH 2ND!!!!!!

Feb.1,2011

Well, we got a surprise yesterday at the cancer center. Had my radiation treatment & saw Dr. Grass. Everything is going about as expected. My "sunburn" will continue to get worse for awhile but 4 weeks after last treatment should be back to normal. Got RX for new cream that is expensive but helps -- however pharmacy had to order and it is supposed to be in today.
Then I had my blood drawn to recheck magnesium. First they couldn't get any blood so called for expert Linda - she worked with my port and got the blood but decided to leave needle in in case I had to have IV. Ange & I went to waiting area. After about 10 minutes here comes LInda - somehow they had thrown my blood away and had to get more! I joked with her which she appreciated because her day wasn't going well. Then we had to wait for test results. Then we had to wait for Dr. Budde to see them to decide what to do- which of course was that I ended up getting 2 grams of magnesium by IV and we didn't get home until about 3. So I upped dosage from 400 to 800 mg. a day and hope that does the trick. Will have it checked the 16th again.
I am glad they are on top of things.
Today we were iced in so canceled radiation treatment. Jack is out now trying to de-ice the van. Doesn't sound like tomorrow will be much better. I don't want to fall and add broken bones to my list of ailments! Anyway - only 6 left!
Alyson started student teaching this week in Williamstown, WV. First week is observation but would appreciate your prayers for her to adjust to
1. new living place
2. new person she is living with
3. No Angela
4. teaching and meeting new people
Someone asked me how I was feeling and I said tired and like I have a sunburn. They said "Well, you look normal - like your old self!" I took that as acompliment and a good sign. The clerk at the grocery store told me how pretty my "hair" looked so of course I had to tell her it was a wig and she said you would never know it. Someone that doesn't have to tell you and gives you a compliment - that made me feel even better!
Thanks again for all your prayers! Oh yes, for those of you that don't know - Jack and I are supposed to be grandparents in September. Bonnie is not feeling so well right now so we would apprectiate your prayers for them. Adam and Jack are ecstatic. Like father like son!Love and a hug for all, Karen

Thurs. Jan. 27

Hello. Well we're down to 8 days left. I was a little discouraged Monday when the doctor told me that the burning will continue up to 14 days after the last treatment and so right now I am feeling the effects from the first 5 or so treatments. But John gave me some new ointment that is helping much more so all is good.
I can't remember if we mentioned that I had a stitch or part of one left just under my skin under my arm where they had the two drain tubes in. It bothered me periodically but was pretty much lodged in. But now it came out so that was a praise!
I am making some popcorn treats for the cancer center workers and am going to insert a Valentine tract. Thought I would try and share the gospel one more time. Please pray for those who aren't saved to come to a saving knowledge of our Saviour. Also plan on taking goodie plates to neighbors with tracts also. Thanks so much for continued prayers.
I am doing well.Love, Karen

Jan. update

Well, not much news. My skin is a little pink and starting to burn a little but I imagine it will get worse before it gets better. Am putting on generic Aquaphor twice daily.
The good news is I have completed 13 treatments and have 12 left. Yippee! Bloodwork on Jan. 31 to see if I am getting enough magnesium.
It was 1 degree here this a.m. which is nothing compared to Iowas below zero temps but cold for us.
Congrats to our dear friends the Craigs on the birth of Zechariah Paul! We pray Mom and son are doing well and Dad too!
Not much else going on. I would appreciate continued prayers that the burning and fatigue would be tolerable without pain meds. Thanks to all of you - enjoy the rest of January! love, Karen

Friday, January 7th

Monday I went for my SIM appt. and got a CT and markings done for radiation.
Treatments started Wed. - was a little longer because they had to take x-rays and pictures to document everything.
Starting Thursday my appointments are to be at 9:15 every morning. Thurs. I went and the machine was broken so ended up having appointment at 2:30. This mornings appointment was fine. I am in and out in less than 10 minutes and you don't feel anything so worst part right now is the driving.
I will be seeing the doctor every Monday after my treatment. I did find out that it will be 25 treatments instead of 30 and now I only have 22 left!
On another note, I went to eye doctor Tues. I have a hemorrhage in my left eye which he was pretty sure was from high blood pressure but referred me to specialist in two months to make sure. So, if you could pray that that would heal I would be grateful. Other than that my eyes aren't too bad except that I need glasses to read.
Hope all is well with you. If anything exciting happens I will try to update you. Thanks again for your prayers. Love, Karen

Mon. January 3rd

Greetings. Hope everyone had as great holidays as we did. We had wonderful traveling weather and the day after we arrived at moms got 6 inches of beautiful snow. We got to see a lot of people however briefly that we don't see very often especially loved our visit with the Lutes.
My wound stayed closed the whole time we were gone and is still closed - yippee! Didn't have too many problems other than being tired. We also got 10 more inches of snow while we were there.
They rescheduled my Sim appointment for today when I got marked for the radiation treatments. It was relatively painless and again the workers are so kind. I will have first treatment on Thurs. Dr. G. assures me the side effects will take 2 weeks to show up so I am kind of counting on that!
Also did bloodwork and have to go back on magnesium but only one pill a day instead of 3and will be rechecked on 31st. Was also happy to find out that Dr. B and S have signed an extension on their contract for 4 more months so that will get me a little farther down the road.
Again thanks for the prayers and I hope and pray all of you have a wonderful New Year. Enjoy every day because your life could change in a matter of seconds! love, Karen
