Fri., Dec. 17

Went to the Wound clinic yesterday despite the weather. My wound was healed down to a pinhole so Dr. Pedalino discharged me thinking it will heal within a week. (He was right - it was healed closed today). But it still could open again and then I would need to call if there is a problem. I am really hoping there are no more wound openings for a long while!
Well, this should be the last post until Dec. 30th. Hope you all enjoy the snow, cold weather and friends and family this Christmas! As always thanks so much for your prayers.

Wed., Dec. 15

Today got off to a quick start. The cancer center called at 10 and asked if they could move my appt. up to 11:30 from 2:30. It worked out well because Glen Beck was in town and traffic was getting bad when I left.
My blood counts were great. I am still a little anemic but she thinks it will work itself out and it's not enough to do anything about. I also get to quit taking 2 medicines. They will check my blood on Dec. 30th to make sure I can quit them for good. I also got a bag of gifts for finishing my chemo treatment. I don't have to see Dr. B again until mid Feb. which should be after radiation.
The not so good news is that Dr. B may be leaving Wilmington not by her choice. Hospital was sold and there are some problems. Won't know until Jan. I can follow her if I want which would be my choice.
I got many thank yous for the cards and rolls and what was interesting is they seemed to like the cards more than the cin. rolls.Keep on praying. Dr. Pedalino in the a.m. Hopefully the snow won't be a problem.
Thanks again for all your prayers and comments. Love, Karen

Tues., Dec.14

Went to see Dr. G yesterday. He was very nice. Explained that radiation is purely preventative but will up percentage of cancer not recurring from 70% t0 90% and we agreed it would be wise to have the treatments. The first visit will be Dec. 30th and will take about 1 to 1 and a half hours because they have to mark where they want the radiation to go. They will also be making a "breast board" for me to hang on to. When treatments actually start they only take about 15 minutes but I will have to be still the entire 15 minutes. I do think I will be better at this than Jack would ever be but it might be hard.
W e plan on first treatment Jan. 3 or 4.
The good thing is the side effects aren't as bad as with chemo. I should just be more tired and there may be some skin irritation. But I will be going every weekday for 5 to 6 weeks (25-30 treatments) depending on condition of my skin. Ange will be home doing online classes and has already volunteered to drive me. I have such wonderful children. I am truly blessed.
Tomorrow is blood work and Dr. Budde checking on me. If there is anything exciting I will try and post it. Also think my wound is getting smaller again so will see whatDr. P says on Thursday!
As always we cannot thank you all enough for all your prayers, cards, and support.
My hope and prayer for all of you is that you have a blessed Christmas as we celebrate the birth of our precious Saviour! love to all, Karen

Karen's latest news....God's greatest news!

Karen's wound near the top of her stomach surgery incision reopened Sunday afternoon. We have been to the Wound Clinic and she is currently packing the wound with a diluted bleach substance. If there are any infected stitches remaining in the wound this solution should clear that up. Or as two other stitches have already made their way out of this same wound others may follow before complete healing is possible. Pray for either scenario.

Monday is the consultation with the radiologist. Karen is willing to have radiation treatments if necessary. Pray for wisdom for the radiologist.

Wednesday she will have her bloodwork done and visit with Dr. Budde. Pray that the bloodwork is okay.

Thursday is the next appointment at the Wound Clinic. Pray for treatment that will promote complete healing of the wound.

Saturday we plan to leave Ohio and spend the night in Illinois before going the rest of the way to Iowa where we will celebrate Christmas with family. Pray for safe travel and no health emergencies.

Last Wednesday Karen and I delivered cinnamon rolls, Christmas cards and a letter of Karen's personal testimony of her faith in Christ to each of the people at the Cancer Center and Wound Clinic that have been such a blessing to us during Karen's illness. Pray that the message of God's great gift of salvation through His Son Jesus Christ will be a blessing to them.

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6

One of Karen's wounds on the stomach incision reopened Sunday afternoon. We went to the Wound Clinic yesterday. She is now using a deleted bleach solution on the packing to rid any stiches that might be in the wound of bacteria so it can heal.

LAST CHEMO DAY!!!!!!!!!

Forgot we did not do update from wound clinic - sorry. Tuesday went to wound clinic and all my wounds have closed up!!! I wanted to jump up and down! I thought they should have at least had balloons and confetti since I've been bugging them since July! However, Dr. P. said not to be surprised if it opens again if there are more stitches that want to come out! A little dampening but not much - we are just going to pray that there are no more!!! Here I come shower!!!

Had a good day at the cancer center. Regular pharmacist was gone so it took a little longer

than usual. Left at 8:00 a.m. and got home at 4:00 P.M. Talked to Dr. B. about next step. For her part - she will keep an eye on me meaning I go back in two weeks to get bloodwork and she wants to see how I am doing overall. Still a bit anemic - for you medical people that means my hemoglobin is in the 10's which is better than 8 or 9 which it has hung around but really should be at least 12. She thinks it may come up on it's own.

Then we talked about radiation. When they did the mammogram in May - the tumor measured 6+ cm. They normally do radiation on anything 5 cm or larger. Then I had one chemo treatment and when they did surgery the tumor had shrunk to 3+ cm. So I will see radiologist on December 13th for a consult to see if we are going to do radiation treatments.

If I do have to have them am going to ask that we start after Jan. 1st so we can get our trip to Iowa with no troubles!

It really was a good day - Jack got to hand out 4 Gospel tracts - one to a cancer pt. that we got to visit with quite awhile. We know that God's word does not return void so are rejoicing in that.

Prayer request - I designed a Christmas card for the cancer center and wound clinic employees thanking them for their care and telling them about the greatest gift I have ever received. I have them printed out and just have to put some finishing embossing and glitter on them, fold them, sign them and put them in the envelopes. They are somewhat individualized as there was a place for their name on the gift tag on the gift on front. The plan is to get them done and delivered next Wed. with some warm cinnamon rolls. Just pray that I will get them finished and have enough energy to bake the rolls and deliver them. Yes the greatest gift I have ever and will ever receive is eternal life - so there are some scripture verses in there and again - we know God's word never reutrns void so I am excited that God has laid this little project on my heart.

Again we appreciate your love, concern, and prayers sooooo much we cannot tell you how much. I bragged to someone recently (I know- you're not supposed to brag - I couldn't help it) that I had people in 9 states and 2(3 if you count USA) countries praying for me. It makes me cry to even think about it!

One more little story and then I will quit. In October the girls had a volleyball game at Free Will Batptist College in Tennesee. A friend of Megan's from Chicago went there to college and is now teaching in TN but knows the vball coach there. The volleyball team gave Al and Ang's team pink roses and ribbons and told them they would be praying for me and also gave pink roses to the crowd. Talk about crying! I'm tearing up right now. It was a real encouragement to the girls and me and so sweet of Allison (Lutes is maiden name) to let the Free Will coach know about it. I'm done. Thanks again for sticking with me!!!! love to all, Karen

November 19th Update

Karen had chemo on Wednesday. She did not get the shot on Thursday to boost her white blood cells. Therefore the pain that she experienced after the last chemo probably won't be a problem this time.

Dr. Budde said that the only thing that might happen as a result of not getting the shot would be a delay of one week for her last chemo. It is scheduled for Wednesday, December 1st. We are praying that it will not be postponed. However December 8th would still give her ten days to recover before our planned trip to Iowa for Christmas.

The final wound appears to be getting smaller each day. I am praying for complete healing by December 9th. That would be the best birthday present I have ever received!

Alyson and Angela arrived home safely from West Virginia for their break. My sister, Sally, will be flying to Columbus on Tuesday. We "Wish you a Merry Christmas!" Oh, no, wrong holiday!
Happy Thanksgiving :)

Wound Clinic Today

We have said our goodbyes to "Arnold", the wound vac, as it has been lovingly packed away in the box that will carry it back to its home in Texas.

As a parting gift, "Arnold" sucked a knotted stitch to the surface of Karen's wound and it was carefully removed by the Wound Clinic nurse. (This could have been a problem had it remained undiscovered in her wound.)

We will be packing the wound every day and return to the Wound Clinic on Tuesday.

As always, we appreciate your prayers. Things that happen, like todays "stitch" discovery, remind us that God hears and answers those prayers.

Chemo Countdown!

We were at the Cancer Center today.

Karen's bloodwork continues to look good.

Several IV's were given before chemo (to prevent some of the side-effects) and the 3 hour IV of chemo.

Tomorrow she will get the shot to promote white blood cell growth.

"Arnold" (the wound vac) is with us until Tuesday.

We are praying for an uneventful few weeks as the cancer & wound treatments come to a close. (Translation: no more hospital stays :)

Thanks for joining with us in that prayer.

Chemo is scheduled for next Wednesday. Two additional treatments will complete her regimen.

Thanks again for your loving, prayerful support of Karen these past few months.

A Tremendous Improvement!

What a beautiful day! I told Karen on the way home from the Wound Clinic today that it was good to have most of our trips to Wilmington over before winter. Her next chemo is scheduled for November 3rd. If she stays on schedule, the last treatment will be December 1st.

The wound vac or "Arnold", as Karen affectionately calls it, is definitely worth its weight in gold! I had not seen her wounds for about a week. What a tremendous improvement! She will probably continue to have "Arnold" until her appointment at the Wound Clinic next Tuesday. The stubborn wound that has never healed might meet with more aggressive treatment next week if Dr. "P." has his way. Hopefully resuming chemo on the 3rd will not adversely affect the healing that has taken place. I know Karen would appreciate your specific prayers for complete healing of all 3 wounds.

Karen still has times of discomfort for one reason or another but overall she feels better than she has for a long time. This has been quite a "crusade" for her. Thank you all so much for your faithfulness in accompanying us on this journey with your thoughts and prayers.

With love and appreciation,
Jack, Karen & family

Oct. 15th

Greetings, loved ones! Got the wound vac working yesterday. It is easier to get around than I thought. It makes noises like a little pig so we thought we should name it Arnold. (For those of you who are under the age of 70, Arnold was the pig on Green Acres.) It has to be changed 3 times a week so we'll have Home Health come twice and go to the wound clinic for the third time. Hopefully it will heal quickly. I am feeling pretty good, with more energy than I've had for months. Will update if anything new happens. Keep on praying, please and thank you!!!!!
Love, Karen

Thankful for Your Prayers

We have had a parade of healthcare professionals come to our home since last night! Karen is getting her dressing changed twice daily by home health. The wound vac is scheduled to arrive between 8-10am tomorrow. It has been known to work miracles and that is exactly what we need! :)

The cancer center visit was short today. No treatment this week. As a matter of fact, chemo has been post-poned for at least 3 weeks to allow for healing of the wounds. Dr. Budde is very encouraged in regard to the cancer treatment Karen has been able to have- the tumor succesfully removed and a good amount of chemo.

Karen has more energy, less nausea and very little pain. It is wonderful to have her feeling this well. Your thoughts and prayers have played a great role in her recovery. (They have helped me, too!)

With grateful hearts,
Jack & Karen

KAREN IS HOME!

She told me she is feeling the best she has since May.

Home-health will be coming to help with the wounds and a home model wound vac will be available for her tomorrow afternoon. Just being on the wound vac one day in the hospital made a big difference in the condition of her wounds. Yesterday they estimated 30 days on the machine but maybe it will be less. Weekly visits to the Wound Clinic will be required, of course.

Tomorrow is our weekly visit to the Boyd Cancer Center. My understanding is that even though this would be her scheduled chemo treatment week they are going to wait because of the recent hospitalization. If that is not correct one of us will update you tomorrow.

PRAY,PRAY,PRAY that there will be no further complications!

PRAISE,PRAISE,PRAISE God for His goodness to us!

We love you!

Home Alone!

I was not able to bring Karen home today as we had planned. :(

There are some complications regarding the wound vac that she needs to promote healing of her wounds.

Please pray that God will make a way for her to have this machine at home for the length of time that it is needed.

We appreciated a visit from Pastor Garren which reminded us that we can TRUST GOD in ALL things. :)

Stay tuned for further developments.

What Did I Forget?

You know the feeling that you are forgetting something but don't know what it is? I had that feeling as I left CMH tonight (No, it wasn't Karen I forgot. She won't get to come home until tomorrow.) As I got closer to home it came to me that I had written some notes, with Karen's help, for the blog posting tonight and didn't bring them with me. Dare I put into words what I think her condition and treatment are medically speaking? Probably not. But here goes anyway.

From the time I left Karen last night until today when I returned to the hospital, one gaping hole had become two gaping holes one being much larger than the other with only a small, thin section of skin separating them. Dr. "U" considered cutting that piece of skin to make it one huge gaping hole but has left it to its own devices for now. (We think it is only a matter of time before it splits open on its own.) You can actually see the stitch in her stomach from the perforated ulcer repair! Too much information? Sorry. If your kids are reading this, maybe they shouldn't be :) Can you tell I'm very tired?!?!

Anyway, they irrigated or flushed all that and it isn't draining so much anymore. Tomorrow they are putting something on the wound. This is what I needed the notes for...... I"ll have to let Karen describe it for you. It's called a wound vac. They will put her on antibiotic meds and hopefully send her home.

Tonight she was getting a blood transfusion. There was a reason for that....I think it had something to do with hemoglobin (Or was it hemo"goblin", Megan?)

Megan was with us today for visiting hours and we appreciated a visit from Lonnie and Carol and miscellaneous texts and phone calls from pastor, friends and family.

I do remember that Karen was very explicit that I thank you for praying even though I had done that in yesterday's blog. So "THANK YOU!"

Clinton Memorial Hospital....Home Away From Home!

Karen had been running a fever every evening this week since Tuesday. Last night she noticed a change in the upper part of her stomach scar. Redness, swelling and pain increased through the night.

This morning we went to the ER and the doctor put a needle in the scar which released the pressure. He thought she might need surgery being unsure of the depth of the problem.

She was admitted to Clinton Memorial. Surgeon, Dr. Ondulick, assured us that because it was draining, surgery would not be necessary. That was a relief!!! By the time the hospitalist examined her later this afternoon, a gaping whole had appeared where the needle had been introduced earlier in the day. Lots of drainage. She has to keep gauze loosely held over the wound (no tape).

She will require antibiotics in pill or IV form, probably until her chemo treatments are completed. Her white blood cell counts are being tossed to and fro with the chemo which doesn't make for good healing of the stomach incision. She might be released from the hospital on Monday.

Karen is looking at three more chemo treatments and probably a lot more visits to the Wound Clinic following completion of those final treatments. She was hoping to be done with chemo by Thanksgiving. Wound Clinic visits may continue into 2011 at this rate.

We want to thank all of you who have been so faithful in praying for Karen. Along with your prayers, your thoughts, cards, food, phone calls, texts....etc. have all meant so much to both of us. We know that everything humanly possible is being done for Karen, but God is ultimately in control of the healing of her body.

Went to cancer center. Had first dose of Taxol chemo. Seemed to go pretty well although slow. We were there a little over 6 hours. I am very tired but otherwise not too bad. We go back tomorrow for a shot to boost white blood cells after a visit to the wound clinic.
I'm really hoping this last antibiotic will do the trick for that stubborn last wound.

Prayer requests; that last wound to heal, Al & Ang have a vball game at Circleville on Monday and I really want to be well enough to go, continued strength and encouragement, I really want to get back to church also! I miss all of you prayer warriors.

thank you all. Karen

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggety-Jig!

I was able to bring Karen home this afternoon! She is still not well, but at least the fever is gone and recovery is in progress.

She is on several medications. One in particular causes nausea. She requests your prayers for a good attitude this week.

Wednesday is supposed to be the first day of the next round of chemo. We're not sure if this latest bout will affect that in any way.

Karen also has an appointment at the Wound Clinic on Thursday. The last stubborn wound was also a source of infection in her body. Prayers for healing appreciated!

Karen wants to "THANK YOU" for praying. I second that..... it is so good to have her back home.

Hospitalized Again

Karen was admitted to CMH again today. She spiked a fever and had swelling and pain in her face and neck. Dr. Budde discovered a significant sore inside her cheek while examining Karen's mouth. She thought it might be the source of the problem. Karen is getting IV's of antibiotic. She looked and felt better by the time I left the hospital at 7pm. It should be a short stay of only a day or two.

Karen appreciates your prayers for her recovery as do all of us who love and care for her so much. Thank you!

09/15/10 CHEMO DAY

I really had another great chemo day. Lori , the fantastic foot lady gave me another wonderful massage. (God is so good to me!) My blood count was good enough (still anemic).

We discussed the next round of treatments. Instead of doing 1 a week for 12 weeks she wants to up the dose a bit and do 1 every 2 weeks for 4 times which would mean I would be done before Thanksgiving! I would really like that. But it will depend on if my body will tolerate it or not. Side effects with this chemo are supposed to be much less harsh.

Prayer Request #1. That I would do okay with the regimen described above.

Then she came back while I was getting chemo and said another blood test came back(they take about 5 viles of blood each time) and there was a little problem so she wants me to drink plenty of water and go back next week and be retested. But not to worry about it!

Prayer request #2. That it was just a hydration problem and that I am able to drink enough water to eliminate the problem.

Of course please continue to pray for my tolerance to the chemo I just got. I couldn't do this without all of your prayers. Wanted to go to prayer meeting but just didn't have enough energy. This has taken quite a while to type. Does anyone else think texting ruins your typing skills?

09/09/10

Wound clinic. Unfortunately my wound got deeper instead of better but Dr. P is confident it will heal. I had so many skin tears that we are now using Press 'n seal instead of tape!

I am feeling some better so thanks for praying - am keeping a positive attitude that I am again on the upward swing from the chemo. Karen

Wed., Sept. 8

Well, I just couldn't go a week without going to the cancer center.
I had some ulcers & sores in my mouth and throat and developed
some sores between my fingers.

I just can't tell you how nice Dr. Budde is and all the nurses.
Anyway I have 2 prescriptions to help but it will probably
be an ongoing problem as long as I am on chemo. I also lost the 3
lbs I gained last week plus 4 more.

Prayer request - pain would let up and that I'll be ready for chemo
next week. Wound clinic tomorrow. Still have one wound that just
doesn't want to heal.
Thanks again for all your support! Karen

SEPT. 1

Chemo today - my bloodwork was good -Yeah!- I gained 3 lbs. -so much for worrying about that problem! My foot massage person was there and gave me a great long wonderful massage and we talked and got to know her better. YeaH!
I go back tomorrow for the white count booster shot. Then I don't have to back for 2 weeks for the last of the "bad" chemo unless of course I have a problem but we're all going to pray for noooooo problems!

The very best news. I asked about going to church because she really scared me with that white count hospital thing last week. She said just don't be in a close crowd or talk to anyone with a cold and wash my hands. No mask. Yeah!

Everyone has been so wonderful to us - it makes me cry when I think of all the cards, food, visits, flowers, and things too numerous to mention that you all have done and most of all the prayers. I truly believe I am doing as well as I am only because God is honoring all of YOUR prayers. I can never thank you enough! Thank you all so very much!
Love and a hug! Karen

Wed., Aug. 25th

Went to see Dr. B. Bloodwork okay except anemic and low, low white blood count.
So, got a bag of iron by IV and need prayer to not get a fever or I'll have
to go into the hospital. I was a little disappointed because I wanted so much
to go to prayer meeting tonight but I guess I shouldn't take a chance.

Also lost 5 more pounds but Dr. B says she isn't concerned about it so
I guess I won't be either.

Next chemo set for next Wed.

Thanks for the prayers - I and doctors am amazed my body is taking chemo
as well as it is. Please don't forget to pray for Roberta Scarberry that she will heal
soon and can get back on chemo.

Love to all, Karen

August 18

Well, today was probably the best chemo day I could ever have.
I got to meet Dr. Skinner - just as wonderful as Dr. B. so I had different
nurses. They had been having trouble accessing my port
for blood but got that fixed with some cleaner (yeah!).

I did lose 5 more pounds - never thought it would disappoint
me to see that scale go down but I am eating as much as
I can. But they never say too much - good thing I have
as much to lose as I do - God knows what He is doing!

They just started the chemo and this wonderful lady
came over and told us she was a volunteer -she
comes from time to time to practice reflexology(of the feet)
on patients who want it. Of course I said yes and got
an awesome foot massage!

Alyson and Angela came along and we played UNO to
make the time go faster - that was fun, too.

I came home and took a 2 hour nap despite the hours
worth of iron dripped into me!

Tomorrow we go back for the shot to boost cells
to help prevent infection but that will only take
about an hour instead of 3-4.

Half done with what I call the worst or bad
chemo treatments! Yeah! Thanks for all
the prayers - I am sure that is why I got
the foot rub!

I'll share a specific request. I really want to be well
enough to go to church sometime and not get
any germs at the same time. I miss my church
family and being in God's house. So pray
for wisdom and health. Thanks!
Love and a hug to all - far and near. Karen

Wound Clinic

We're down to one! The wound that was tunneled is all that remains to heal on the stomach incision! We don't have to flush and pack it anymore. A silver patch and bandage, changed daily, are the only things required until the appt. next Tuesday.

Tomorrow the chemo resumes. Your prayers for that to go well are appreciated.

A Busy Week!

Hi! Jack here. We went to the Wound Clinic yesterday. Three of the wounds have healed, one is almost there and the last one is being stubborn! Along with taking more time to heal, it is also requiring an antibiotic. Overall, everyone was pleased with the progress!

Today Karen introduced Alyson and Angela to the Boyd Cancer Center. Her weekly visit did not require any IV's or additional meds.

Next Wednesday she will resume the same plan for chemo that she began before the stomach surgery. They will also be giving her iron for her anemia. On Thursday, she will receive the shot that will boost her white blood cell count.

This Friday Dr. Schirmer will have the remaining drain tube and the staples removed in his office.

On Saturday Karen will don her new wig and dress for Megan and Frank's wedding. Pray for her to be able to tolerate the heat for a few pictures and the wedding itself as it will be outside at Polen Farms in Kettering, Ohio. Also for physical strength for the next few days.

As always, we appreciate your faithfulness in reading the blog and praying for Karen and our family.

August 6, 2010

Dr. S visit went well. He only took out one drainage tube but one less tube is one less tube!
The trips are getting easier - I have learned to take nausea pills ahead of time and that helps a lot!

Also, Dr. S said staples will come out next Friday and probably the other drain tube also - said everything looks fine and he was also pleased about the lymph nodes and will turn me back over
to Dr. B for the rest of the cancer treatment.

I also, on the way home - went into a store and bought something!- Now I must be getting back to
normal if there is such a thing!

Feet and legs are still swollen but I am able to sleep more and more in the bed so am hoping that works itself out. Appetite still has problems but am doing much better.

No more doctors until Tues, WEd. and Fri next week! so won't update unless something
is newsworthy. Thanks again to all of you! Give God the glory!

Well, I think we had relatively good news. The path report was back - The tumor

was about 3.5 cm at the greatest extent (a little smaller than we all had thought).

Dr. Budde said it was hard to say if the chemo had shrunk it already or not.

Then out of 13 lymph nodes only one showed any evidence of cancer.

Dr Budde was extremely happy with that.

Overall, she said the cancer would be classified as Stage IIB and I already thought

we were at 3!

Chemo will probably resume week of Aug. 16th. She is giving me a break for

Megans wedding!

Words will never even begin to be able to thank you ALL for the many, many kindnesses you have shown us from prayers to food to visits to flowers to momentos to encouragement to cards to phone calls to decks to putting in a high rise toilet to extra money for gas, wigs, sunscreeen to helping out with Megan's wedding - there just isn't a hug big enough or a thank you great enough - but you know God sees it all and I can see jewels in crowns and many rewards.
The fight isn't over yet - we are gathering energy for the next battle!
Thanks to all - I feel those prayers and that love coming through!
Will update with Dr. S. visit Friday!

Blessings Abound!

We have a beautiful ramp and deck, a high-rise toilet, plants and fresh cut flowers, a steady flow of cards, blog comments, phone calls, visits, food and prayers. What a blessing! THANK YOU ALL!

Karen is doing well today. Some pain, of course!

With the two weeks Karen has for her abdominal wounds and chest incision to heal, and no continuation of chemo yet, she should be in good shape (under the circumstances) for Megan & Frank's wedding. Your specific prayers for Karen on August 14th are much appreciated! We want her to be as much a part of this very special day as she can be.

Thanks again,
Jack

Surgery Report

Karen's surgery went well today. Dr. Shirmer removed her right breast and the lymph nodes. He did not see anything suspicious to the naked eye. He also thought the tumor had shrunk some from having just the one chemo treatment.

Karen is at CMH tonight. I think her mom will stay with her if it is okay with the hospital. She is unable to move her right arm much and the left arm had the IV on the inside of her elbow so it was not very convenient to use it either.

Karen's prayer request: LESS PAIN; she said this is the worst pain of the three different surgeries!

As always, thanks for everything, especially your prayers. They have sustained Karen and our family throughout her illness.

Thank You for Praying!

This mornings visit to Boyd Cancer Center went well. Dr. Budde told us everything looks good for surgery. After Karen spent two hours getting magnesium, we had lunch before going to the 1:00 appt. with the surgeon.

Karen will have all the breast tissue and lymph nodes removed from her right breast. The surgery should take a couple of hours. We are to arrive at 9:45am, but don't know for sure when she will go to the operating room. We do know that she will be in the hospital Thursday night.

Chemo treatments will resume after Megan & Frank's wedding.

Thank you for praying!

A DAY OF GOOD NEWS!

We have good news! The wounds are healing!!!!! They discovered #5 today but it is small. We only need to pack them once a day. Karen will be on yet another antibiotic for the infection in the wounds. (I don't know how she keeps track of all the pills!) Her next appt. at the Wound Clinic is Tues., August 10th.

Tomorrow we go to the Boyd Cancer Center in the morning and the surgeon's office in the afternoon. Dr. Shirmer, who did the hernia surgery, will do her surgery on Thursday.
Karen needs to be at CMH at 9:45am.

We have more good news! Thanks to the kindness of our friends George and Laura Craig, we will have a ramp for Karen this Saturday. It has been so difficult for her to manage our steps. Even after her recovery, this will be a much easier way for her to get in and out of the house with her arthritic knee. Thank you, Craig family!

We also have a high rise toilet coming. (I don't think any of us will miss the commode in the hallway!) Thank you Bryan Anthony and Pastor Garren for researching and installing this wonderful convenience!

Special thanks to Shawn Chaney for helping Karen with haircuts, styling the wig, and dealing with the effects of her cancer in general. Also to Pat Bryan, our long distance friend, who is a constant source of encouragement.

We are so blessed by your help and offers of help, the prayers, (Many have told us that they pray for Karen numerous times a day.) the thoughts, visits, flowers/plants, food, blog and facebook comments, phone calls and cards. (Karen has averaged 2 cards a day since returning home from the hospital on June 28th!)

THANK YOU FOR EVERY EXPRESSION OF CONCERN AND LOVE FOR KAREN AND OUR FAMILY!

"Looking Ahead"

Karen is going to try sleeping in a bed tonight! She is hoping that will help the swelling in her feet and legs.

I asked her to try on her wig tonight. I'm sure it will work well for her when needed. After seeing her without hair for awhile (or with her little cap covering her head) it seemed strange to see her with hair!

I'm not sure I will do a new post Sat.-Mon. unless we have something of significance to report.

Appointments next week:

Tues. p.m.-Wound Clinic
Wed. p.m.-Surgeon
Thurs. (a.m.?)-Surgery

P.S. Karen has a difficult time navigating steps. She wants a ramp built over our existing steps and sidewalk out front by the time she gets home from the hospital. If you can recommend someone reliable who can do the work on short notice, let us know. Thanks!

"Karen's Cancer Crusade"

Today Megan ordered a dress for Karen that will hopefully work for the wedding. Tomorrow she is getting her wig styled so it will be ready. As the August 14th wedding date approaches, I can't help but reflect on the breast cancer diagnosis that was confirmed on May 14th.

If you have followed the blog from the start you know that it was Karen's idea to keep those who were interested informed of her crusade against the cancer that had invaded her body. Little did she know that this crusade would include a hernia repair and stomach surgery (x2) with complications.

As she faces her next surgery on Thursday to remove her right breast and some lymph nodes it brings the focus back to the cancer for which this blog was created. Karen appropriately named her blog. SHE IS A CRUSADER INDEED!

Unexpected News

Our visit to the Cancer Center brought news we were not expecting today. Dr. "B", oncologist, decided that waiting for the stomach incision to heal before continuing chemo is not the best option for Karen anymore. Dr. "B" called Dr. "S", surgeon, and Karen now has a mastectomy scheduled for next Thursday, July 29th. The surgeon's office has not called us yet with a specific time.

Wound Clinic

The appointment at the Wound Clinic went well. Karen has 4 unhealed places in her incision. Photos & measurements were taken of each one and samples of drainage for testing.

A method of packing will be used to promote healing. They are requesting home health to come twice a day for a week. They will give us instructions so we will be able to help Karen as needed. She will have weekly appointments at the Wound Clinic for awhile.

Tomorrow at 9:30 am we go to Boyd Cancer Center. We never know for sure what they will do or how long we'll be there. They always start by taking some of Karen's blood. That tells them what treatment, if any, is needed. We'll update you tomorrow!

Family Time

Yesterday (Thurs.) was my day off from work. I guess I took it off from the blog, too!

Karen is now being mostly cared for by her mother. This has allowed Megan & Sally to get some painting done in the house Megan & Frank will be living in near Dayton.

Karen is still having bouts of diarreah. Her appetite isn't great, but she continues to make the effort to eat. Although weight loss would normally be okay for Karen, it is discouraged during chemo treatment. (She has lost about 3o pounds since her breast cancer diagnosis.)

We don't think they will resume Karen's chemo treatments until the incision looks better. Hopefully Tuesday's appt. at the Wound Clinic will give us a better understanding of the healing process.

Alyson and Angela will be arriving tonight. They will be here until Sunday. If things continue as they are, you may not see any new blog postings for a day or two.

Thank you for reading the blog, for your comments, your thoughts and your prayers.

Today's Appointment

Dr. Budde was very encouraged by Karen's bloodwork. Potassium levels improved! She did need an IV for magnesium and got prescriptions for antibiotics.

An appointment was made for Tuesday with the Wound Clinic. The incision is requiring some extra attention as healing is slow.

Karen's next appointment at the Boyd Cancer Center is Wednesday, July 21.

She is requesting prayer for the swelling in her ankles and legs; also healing of the incision.

Thanks,
Jack & Karen

P.S. Our IOWA guests arrived safely on Tuesday and Alyson & Angela will be home this week-end from West Virginia.

Company Coming!

Karen was able to be alone for awhile this afternoon as Megan and I both had errands to run. She did fine! Tomorrow my sister, Sally, is coming from IOWA along with Karen's mom, Frieda Naber. Sally is going to do some painting for Megan & Frank. Karen's mom will be with us until Megan's wedding on August 14th. This will be a huge blessing as I am working more hours now and Megan will have details to take care of for the wedding.

Karen asked me to request prayer for her feet and legs. They are still swollen and uncomfortable. Keep praying for the incision to heal, also.

I may not have time to blog tomorrow (Tuesday) with company coming. Karen has an appt. on Wednesday, so I'll be sure to put an update on the blog that evening.

Thank you for your thoughts & prayers, blog & facebook comments, cards, phone calls, personal inquiries, etc. We are so grateful for our family and friends.

Renewed Strength

Karen is getting stronger. Doing more for herself. She even got out of her recliner without help today! That and the couch are her two sitting spots. Until today she could only get up from the couch by herself.

Her incision has a few places that aren't healing very well. Dr. "B" told us it will heal from the inside out. I'm sure they will keep an eye on it. Infection is always a concern.

We appreciate your faithfulness in praying for Karen and our family.

Day 3 at the Cancer Center

Karen and Megan spent a good part of the day again at the Cancer Center. Karen needed potassium and magnesium. The IV for potassium takes 3 hours and they did the magnesium at the same time.

If Karen doesn't think she is doing better by Monday they want to know. Otherwise her next scheduled appointment is Wednesday.

Pray for improvement! :)

Thanks,
Jack

Brief Update

Karen and Megan spent most of the morning at the Cancer Center. Karen received her 2nd unit of red blood cells for anemia. Although she did not vomit today, she had diarrhea for about 3 hours this evening. I feel so bad for her.

Tomorrow morning she and Megan will return to the Cancer Center to see if they need to do anything more right now. We'll let you know.

A Day at the Cancer Center

We left home today for a 9:15am appt. with the oncologist and got back home at 6:00pm tonight.

Karen checked in and they took her blood as they usually do. (Karen told Megan and me they had trouble getting her blood.)

When Dr. B. saw Karen and talked with her, she knew chemo was out of the question for today. Instead they examined her incision and put additional peri strips on it to help keep it together and dressed it again. They told her to clean it several times a day.

Karen's request: PRAY FOR HEALING OF THE INCISION.

Next, they started an IV of potassium and one for hydration. That was followed by a transfusion of one unit of red blood cells needed for anemia. When Dr. B. checked on Karen to see if she was doing okay, she said Karen could check into the hospital overnight if she felt the need. I'm sure you know that wasn't going to happen!!!!!!

Karen has an 8am appt. tomorrow for another unit of blood. She will need to return Friday also to make sure all is well.

We hope this will speed up Karen's recovery process. THAT WOULD BE GOOD NEWS!!!!!

Karen's illness is teaching us to trust in medical professionals, but even more than that to trust in God. Your prayers are effective!

No Stitches; No Staples!

Karen is now stitchless (from the hernia surgery) and stapleless (from the stomach surgery). The hernia repair is doing better because it had time to heal before the chemo. Healing is slow for the stomach, both inside (stomach) and out (incision). Nausea and vomitting continue at times.

Please continue to pray for the healing of Karen's body from the most recent surgery.

Appointment tomorrow at 9:15am with the oncologist.

We continue to be blessed by your thoughts and prayers. A special blessing today was the removal of our old appliances and delivery/installation of our new washer and dryer. Thank you Pastor Garren, David K. and Matt K.!

Dr. Appointments

I was gone most of the day. (Back in the working world.) Also, our clothes dryer died last night so I went shopping after work. I missed my marriage partner on this shopping trip. It is not nearly as much fun making a big purchase (washer & dryer) alone. Karen is not able to go anywhere yet except for scheduled Dr. appointments.

Tuesday is Karen's appt. with Dr. U for staple removal. He was always very encouraging on his daily visits with Karen in the hospital. Hopefully he will be able to continue in that vein tomorrow.

Wednesday is her appt. with the oncologist. She is not ready to continue cancer treatment until she feels better. Dr. B wants to see her anyway.

Happy 4th of July!

If you are in the habit of checking the blog daily, you know that there was no entry for yesterday, Saturday, July 3. It was not because we were out celebrating the 4th! :) I had a full day of training on computer for Holiday Inn Express. I guess more time on the computer didn't appeal to me! Megan took care of things on the homefront. Have I mentioned how much we appreciate her?!

Sunday for Karen is pretty much like any other day of the week since she is unable to attend church. She misses Sunday School/Church and I know that she is missed. This would be a good time to specifically thank those of you who attend Fayette Bible Church. Your thoughtfulness, expressed in so many ways, has been wonderful. Thank you!

Karen asked me again this morning if I think she is getting better. To me, that means she doesn't think so.....however, each day that passes brings her closer to a complete recovery from the surgery.

Appointments this week in Wilmington include Tues. am to remove the staples and Wed. am with her oncologist. Because she is still pretty weak, I'm sure this will be very tiring for her.
Your prayers for those 2 days and every day are much appreciated.

Care Givers

Either Megan or I need to be available for Karen right now. Sometimes it takes both of us!

I went outside today to mow the ditch leaving Megan to care for Karen. It wasn't long before Megan came out to get me. Karen had thrown up and at the same time broken the glass her water was in. We got things back in order and I was able to finish the mowing. (Someday we will see the humor in these situations.)

Besides the nausea, SMELLS bother her so eating continues to be a challenge. The shaved turkey sandwich couldn't be eaten tonight because the bread smelled to "yeasty". :)

Karen's pain is mostly in the upper part of her incision. Swelling of ankles and legs is still causing discomfort.

As always, thank you for your prayers for her recovery.

WANTED: STRENGTH!

I asked Karen if she had anything for the blog today. Her reply- "I want to get my strength back."

Even though she is hungry at times, it is difficult to find food and drink that appeal to her. She will try something and not eat much of it or not want it again. If you have any suggestions, let us know. :)

Karen is not using the walker now so that is good. Her feet and legs are still quite swollen. She can't be on them for very long at a time.

Sleeping goes in spurts but every little bit helps!

As Karen improves each day with her eating, exercise and sleep I'm sure she will get her strength back.

Appreciate your prayers!

"....a little more..."

Today Karen asked me if I thought she was getting better. I may have hesitated, but I said "Yes". She is walking a little more.....eating a little more......sleeping a little more.....
Even "......a little more...." IS PROGRESS!

Please pray that the swelling in her feet and legs would go down and the pain and soreness from surgery would lessen.

Thanks!

Challenges of the Day

Another day is almost over. Anything that requires strength is a challenge for Karen. That is just about everything!

We have a walker (Thank you, Shelly & Barb!) that is most helpful in getting to the commode set up in the hallway. Her recliner is the chair of choice right now. She does sit on the couch for a change of pace. Once today she got up from the couch by herself and did not use the walker! She has not wanted to attempt the bed yet.

Talking on the phone or having visitors does not appeal to her right now. I'm sure her mouth and throat are still sore. "Everything hurts!" was how she described her pain today.

She doesn't have a lot of "likes" where food is concerned. She uses jello to get her meds down. After awhile she will probably tire of that, as well!

We know that everything will improve by and by and the challenges of today will no longer exist!

We are most grateful for those who are keeping Karen in their thoughts and prayers.

"There's No Place Like Home!"

We were able to bring Karen home this afternoon. A big step in the right direction! She is still on several meds and is pretty weak. Hopefully sleep will come easier and food will taste better!

Karen will have her staples out in 7-10 days. She will see her oncologist a week from Wednesday.

We appreciate your continued prayers for her speedy recovery and future cancer treatment.

Megan's Text

I was playing the piano in church this morning when my cell phone vibrated. It was this text from Megan who was already at the hospital:

"mom will most likely be able 2 go home 2moro afternoon!!! both docs were just in and r in agreement. dr. u. said prob afternoon cuz his morning is full!"

This was an answer to prayer.

Pray for us tomorrow as we make the transition from hospital to home. Thanks!

Prayer, Praise & Thanks

Prayer
Karen wants to come home. They are waiting for a blood test to come back negative for an infection she has before that will be possible. They are giving her antibiotic through her port. She is now taking medication orally, as well. Her mouth is very sore so this is difficult. Dr. U ordered "Magic Mouthwash" to dull the pain. She is still having trouble sleeping so they will also be giving her something tonight to help her sleep. As you can tell, they are doing everything they can to restore her health and keep her comfortable. Your prayers for these things are appreciated!

Praise
Karen loved her mashed potatoes (lunch & supper) and toasted cheese sandwich (supper). It's the simple pleasures in life that mean so much! They are even allowing Megan to get her a Frosty from Wendy's tonight to aid in the pill taking. I hope it tastes good to her!

Thanks
I know Karen would want me to thank you for your prayers and encourage you to continue to pray while she is recovering. Megan and I are especially thankful for being included in your prayers. We are all three able to meet the challenges of each day with God's strength and grace because you are praying.

Jack

A Good Day

This evening (Friday) Karen was no longer attached to the IV pole. We took a walk in the hallway unencumbered! She ate jello, soup and a bit of ice cream. The nurses and their assistants commented on her excellent progress and how much healthier she looked to them.

Yesterday (Thursday) Karen's hair started to fall out as a result of her chemo treatment 2 weeks ago. Her hair was cut short today and she was wearing a cap when I arrived at the hospital. I thought it would bother me to see this side-effect, but it is a look that you quickly adjust to. We are not sure yet when treatment will resume for the cancer. Nor are we sure just when she'll get to come home from the hospital. Very soon we hope!

As always, we are so thankful for your thoughts and prayers.

Jack

Keep Praying!

We are seeing signs of recovery- fewer IV's, no NG tube or catheter, a diet of liquids and jello. Karen's body is healing from the surgery! Thank you for your prayers.

Karen has been through so much since the diagnosis of her breast cancer. That revelation alone would be enough to send most of us into a tailspin. She has faced each new obstacle with faith and courage. Continue to pray for her as she experiences the side-effects of the pain medication, chemo, and related drugs.

Some of you have asked about visiting Karen. Based on today (Thursday) I would suggest that you wait. Keep praying, sending cards, calling or texting, or checking the blog. We do appreciate your love and concern.

We (Jack, Megan, Ginger and Skipper) want Karen to be home. We know your prayers will hasten her arrival!

Thanks for everything you have done for Karen and our family.

More Good News!

I called Megan (at the hospital with her mom) after work. She said, "Guess what?...... we have a liquid diet!" Headed to CMH now for a couple of hours. Keep praying and checking the blog....this is the exciting part of Karen's recovery from the surgery!

Quick Update

Received a call from CMH. They are moving Karen to room 4151. Megan talked to Karen. We think the NG tube is out. More later........

Rejoice in the Lord always....

After a break this afternoon, Megan and I returned to the hospital. Karen was doing well. Her words were- "I am hopeful" and "Don't I look better!" So glad to hear her being positive about her situation. In between her small naps she would smile occasionally and once she winked at me and said "Did you catch that?" and she winked again. I have missed the Karen I know and love sooooo much. Thank you for praying her back!

As Megan blogged earlier today, the stomach is not an issue anymore, however she is still dealing with the fever as a result of the chemo weakening her immune system. Pray for that and for decisions that will eventually need to be made regarding future treatment of her breast cancer.

Oh, and thanks to all you followers. When I suggested that more of you become "public" I had a number in my mind for a new total- 28. Guess how many followers were on the blog when I signed in tonight? 28! :)

Of course, we appreciate ALL OF YOU (public or private) and consider your love and friendship a special gift to us from God. Thanks too for your comments on the blog.

Truly, a day for rejoicing! Thank you, God.

Surgery Update

Dr. U. did not find any leakage in Mom's stomach. The contrast on the CT was probably leftover barium that she drank last Sunday in the ER. The fever was most likely a result of her immune system being down from chemo. Dr. U. said NO MORE CT SCANS!!! Hopefully NO MORE SURGERY as well. He removed her two drain tubes and will remove the NG tube as soon as she passes gas or has a bowel movement. Not sure as to when she will be able to come home. Is in the ICU for now and will have to keep an eye on the fever as well as white blood cell count. Thank you for all your prayers.

Another Surgery

Found out around 1:30 this morning that Mom will have to have the stomach surgery again. Dr. U. said he thinks it's leaking. The surgery is scheduled for 7:00 this morning, Wed. June,23. This is high risk, especially since her white blood cell count is not the greatest, but if she doesn't have it she will only keep getting worse. Mom was discouraged today because she was not feeling well and now the news of this surgery is devastating. Please, please pray. Thank you.

A Few More Days at CMH

Today Karen mentioned some things that she wanted put on the blog.

Here goes:

The snip of the stomach that was taken during surgery and sent to the lab came back positive for bacteria so she will be given antibiotics for that when she goes home.

The CT scan done on Saturday will be repeated on Thursday. If everything is okay, the NG tube will be removed. Karen will then be able to start on a liquid diet and work up to solid food.

Because of the nutrition she is currently receiving from the IV's, her blood sugars have been hard to regulate and they have been giving her insulin. Hopefully,"real food" will solve that problem.

Some good news:

Karen's white blood cell count is up!

All thoughts and prayers appreciated. Karen really does look better today. Dr. U. says that is a sign of healing. We know that your prayers have been heard!

A Day of Ups and Downs

Well..... a day of ups and downs. Karen called me at 9:15am Sunday saying she had slept almost 6 hours total Saturday night. An answer to prayer! She said she was feeling better after getting some sleep.

At around 2pm when I got to the hospital, the surgeon had been to see her already. She asked me if I wanted the "good news" or the "bad news". Uh oh!

I said, "There's bad news?" If she understood Dr. U. correctly, he told her he wanted to repeat the scan like she had Saturday in several (meaning 7 or 8) days. An extended hospital stay did not appeal to Karen! (The radiologist will read Saturday's scan tomorrow. Maybe it will look better to him. We can pray that way, can't we?) We do want her stomach to be healed completely. If it takes a few extra days in the hospital, we'll work with it.

The "good news"- we celebrated with Karen as she was brought ICE CHIPS. Her first post-surgery meal! She also had the cath. removed and was able to go "potty" on her own a few hours later. Yeah!!!!!

She also had to have a potassium IV this afternoon and it burned so badly going in it reminded me of her early Sunday morning pain a week ago until they changed to a new vein and got it regulated properly. When we left tonight, she was settled in bed and she looked the best to me that I have seen her all week. I guess she really needed that potassium (but not the pain...please!)

Thank you for reading the blog and thanks to those who post comments. We will continue to print them out and share them with Karen at the hospital until she can be home to read them on the computer screen herself!

Jack

SLEEP!

Karen called me at 9:15 this morning to let me know she slept 6 hours last night and was feeling better! Thank you for praying.

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Karen's Own Words

Karen dictated to me what she wanted to share with you for today.

"News a little disappointing today. CT scan appears to show some leakage. So the NG (A tube that removes stomach contents through the nose.) will be in a few more days. A radiologist will look at the scan on Monday. The scan will probably be repeated. Waiting for the stomach to heal is better than having surgery again! White blood cell count is down. (A result of the chemo treatment.) Please pray for the count to go up and for sleep to be possible. I try to pray for people because I can't sleep but it is hard. I appreciate everyones kindness and prayers."

Jack's words- "Angela & Alyson arrived safely!"

Public Followers

I just became follower #24 of karenscancercrusade.blogspot.com! Since I suggested that it would be an encouragement for Karen to have more public followers when she gets home from the hospital, I thought I should set the example and/or see how difficult it is to do. As the old saying goes "If I can do it, you can do it!" Amazing!!!!!

Thanks to all who follow the blog whether publicly or privately. We know you are thinking of Karen and keeping her in your prayers and that is really the most important thing.

P.S. Alyson and Angela are coming home this evening. Pray for them to arrive safely. Thanks!

Tomorrow- Day 6!

Well....the good thing is tomorrow (Saturday) is Day 6 following surgery. They have scheduled a test to see if Karen's stomach is healing properly. Our prayer would be that it is and that she will be able to begin a liquid diet (Not from a bag on a pole!) so that we are one step closer to bringing her home.

Megan spent the day with her and I joined them at 5pm. Karen is still battling nausea and sleeplessness. Keep praying for improvement there. I don't think she is requiring as much pain medication, though.

Visitors, personal inquiries about Karen, phone calls, texts, facebook messages, the blog followers & comments, cards, food & meals, a plant, a gift in the mail....we are continually blessed by your kindness. Each day God brings what we need when we need it. One thing is sure, we are in constant need of your PRAYERS. Thank you for everything!

Love,
Jack for Karen & family

Karen's Personal Request- James 5:16b

Karen asked Megan and me who was updating the blog for her today. She asked that we share this verse with you: "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." James 5:16b

She is requesting prayer for 2 things: the nausea to lessen and for some sleep. Her faith is still strong even though her body has been temporarily weakened! THANK YOU FOR PRAYING!

THE GOOD NEWS: They have moved her out of ICU! She is in room #4149. NO FEVER! Both surgeons (hernia and stomach repair) and her oncologist visited with her today. They have a better understanding of her condition and think she is doing well all things considered. She receives excellent care from hospital employees and Megan hardly ever leaves her side during visiting hours. Thank you, Megan!

A Big Thank You to: Adam, Alyson, Angela, and our IOWA family members who are great supporters.

To Everyone: Thanks again for the many ways you have shown your thoughtfulness to Karen and our family.

One Day at a Time

We are becoming very familiar with the ICU at CMH! Maybe a day or two more and then a move to a regular room! Funny how that sounds good, but it does. The fever was still active off and on today. In other ways, her surgeon thinks every thing is going well. He assured us that if he is concerned about anything, he will definitely let us know. She has a hard time getting comfortable...hmmm two recent surgeries may have some bearing on that. Thankfully, Megan is there most of the time to make adjustments to the bed, blankets, pillows, etc. And of course, hospital staff are very accomodating. She doesn't feel like she can visit with people much, probably because of the tube in her nose and her dry mouth. Her "liquid" nutrition hangs on a pole- no food or drink yet. She said "short" visits would be ok, though. As always, the many ways you communicate your love and care for Karen and our family are so appreciated. If you are willing to identify yourself as a follower on this blog, I would encourage you to do so. It was Karen's idea to do the blog when she was diagnosed with the breast cancer and I know it means so much to her that so many of you read it. Keep praying!!!!! Love you- Harris family

A Slow Recovery

Karen is still in ICU. Megan was there most of the day. I joined her from 5-8pm. News of the day- a blood transfusion (sometimes needed after surgery) and a fever (with meds was starting to drop before we left). Even with pain medication, I think she is pretty uncomfortable. She is also aware of time and I'm sure it seems long for her. She may not remember everything (like what happened yesterday!) but knows people when they're in her room and takes note of phone calls, cards and prayers when we make mention of them. Thanks again for being so supportive of our family. Jack for all

Monday, June 14, 2010

Megan and I spent the afternoon and evening with Karen. She will be in ICU for a couple of days and then a regular room a few more. Breathing machine tube and oxygen removed today! Pain level still high so morphine given as needed. She can't have anything to eat or drink yet. Dr. says all is going well, though. As always, your cards, calls, texts, comments, visits, etc. all appreciated but most of all your continued thoughts and prayers. Please pray specifically that she will not get any infection. Thanks, Jack for Karen and family

Surgery Update

Mom got out of surgery at about 7:00 this evening. She had a hole in her stomach caused by a medication she was taking for arthritis. She will no longer be able to take that or anything that has aspirin in it. She is doing well and will have to be in the hospital for about a week. Praying that she does not get any infection. Thanks for all your prayers.

June 13th

Hi, everybody-this is Megan. Mom is in surgery; we do not know how long it will be as we do not know the exact cause or site of the perforation. Please pray that the surgeon will find the problem and be able to fix it quickly. Will update again as soon as we find out more.

June 12

Well, today has not been the best.
Nausea big time at 5:00 a.m.
so took medicine but it
took awhile to kick in. And this
"face ache" just doesn't want to go
away!

However, I am feeling better than I was
this a.m. Hopefully I will figure a way to
lessen the face pain.
Really, I am in need for nothing other than
prayers which I can feel coming my way and
uplifting my soul. You are all so dear and kind
to me and my family. I feel like I should be
doing something constructive but don't really
have the energy to do anything!
Thanks for listening!

Friday, June 11th

Headache gone this a.m. and I actually
felt better than I have. Hope it lasts!
Megan took me for my shot - didn't
take long and relatively painless.
Met a young woman that had a double
masectomy and is on same treatment program
I am only a couple weeks ahead of me.

Headache is back this p.m. but not as bad as yesterday
and if that's the only problem I can handle
it!
Thanks again for all the comments and cards and
prayers and visits and phone calls - I appreciate them
so much and so do Jack and Megan. You all mean
so much and I can just feel the support and prayers.

I welcome calls -I will tell you if I am not up to talking
or just let it go to voicemail!
One person said my hair could start falling out as soon as
today - it hasn't yet! I'll keep you posted on that -Jack
is more concerned about it than I but I guess he see's
my head more than I do!

Thurs. June 10th

Yesterday I got the staples out, but stitches have to stay in one more week. Dr. S. okayed me for chemo.

Today we left home at 7:45 and got home at 2:00. Next time it won't be quite as long. June 24th is next chemo. So far so good. Except for a headache I feel okay. They have great anti-nausea drugs! One drug was red--given through the port in 2 big shots. The other is in a drip bag. They also gave me the anti-nausea drugs through the port and drew blood through the port; the port is a good thing!

Tomorrow I am supposed to go get a shot to boost white blood cell production and will do that each time the day after I have chemo. God is good!

June 8

I am feeling stronger every day.
Shawn is coming to cut my hair today
so it will be easier when it starts falling
out!
Also, Dr. Budde's office called - changed
my appointment to Thursday, June 10th so
I have one less day of suspense!
Also, with Shawn's help want to order a wig
today.
Am sleeping better and swelling in feet
has gone down.
Again, thanks for the calls, visits and prayers!
Keep them coming!

Feeling better; staples out Wednesday(6/9); first chemo on Fri.(6/11) at 9:00 am

June 3rd

Some good news today. Beth
from BCCP called with a billing
number so apparently I
did qualify for insurance during
treatment for the cancer!

Also, even though Dr. S. and I don't
think I'm ready to start chemo Dr.
Budde still wants to see me
tomorrow so have an appointment
at 9:15.
Will update with anything new after
that appointment!

June 2nd

Yeah! We got rid of the drain tube!
Staples and stitches stay in at least another week so
no chemo yet.
Am feeling much better though. Would like to
sleep a little better at night and get rid
of swelling in ankles and feet. Dr. S. thought
it would dissapate(sp.) as I become more
active. A shower is going to feel soooo
wonderful!

Again, can't thank you all enough for your
continued prayers! You help me sooo much!

June 1st
This is Jack for Karen- she is well into her recovery at home. Dr. Shirmer will see her tomorrow afternoon. She is hoping he will remove the drain tube. "A shout out" to Pat Bryan for being such a sweetheart. She will send you a note soon. Karen, along with our whole family, want to thank everyone for all the thoughts, prayers, cards, phone calls, flowers, food, visits and blog comments. We love you all!

May 30th

Better today. Slept all night with only 1 pain pill at 10 p.m. Appetite has returned; I don't know if that's good or bad! Adam and Bonnie left this afternoon, but Alyson and Angela are here until tomorrow. Thanks for all the prayers, cards, and good thoughts!

May 29th

Well, I'm home! I feel much better than yesterday. Adam and Bonnie came this morning and are staying for the weekend. It's nice to have all the family here. It's good to be home.

May 28th

Hello, it's Megan again. Mom has to stay in the hospital tonight; hopefully this will be the last night. She is having some pain but is up and moving around some. She is having trouble sleeping and doesn't have much of an appetite, but she is doing her best to drink plenty and eat what she can. Looking forward to getting her home and making her more comfortable. Thanks for all of your support!

surgery update

Hey everybody, it's Megan with the update. Mom went into surgery around 3:15 this afternoon and came out at about 7. It lasted a bit longer than expected, but everything went well. She is settled into her room and seems to be doing well. She is talking and even gave us a thumbs up sign! Not sure how long she will be in the hospital; hopefully she will be able to come home tomorrow or Saturday. Thanks for all your prayers and well wishes!

May 26th

Well, good news and bad news. Dr. S. doesn't think
there is any infection but he cannot do the surgery
laprascopically (sp.) so I will be in the hospital a couple
days. Also regular surgery takes less time so I won't
be in surgery as long as I would have!

Think of me and say a little prayer about
12:30 and 4:00 p.m. Thanks to all!

May 25 p.m.

Back from tests.
Surgery scheduled for 12:45 Thursday. I am not sure if that's when
surgery is or when I have to be there. They seem to think I will get
to go home yet that day so that's what I will be praying for!

Cancer center called and scheduled first round of chemo for
Friday, June 4th at 9:15 if I am recovered enough from
surgery.

It certainly is tiring to be sick! But you meet a lot of nice people!

May 25 a.m.

Hospital called this a.m. Have a couple more tests scheduled today.
They are going to test my infection for mersa for one thing. Let's pray that it is not.
They have also scheduled "procedure" for Thursday so if all the tests go okay
guess I'll be in surgery Thursday. Pray for quick recovery.
Also Dr. Buddy called yesterday afternoon - decided if I have hernia repair
I will not be ready for chemo on Friday and will shoot for Thursday, June 3rd as
first day.More when I have news.

May 24 update

My cancer is breast cancer, it is ductal and it is invasive. It is palpable (it is not attached to the chest wall- this is a good thing!)
Dr. Buddy wants to do chemotherapy to try and shrink it before surgery.

The chemo involves 2 kinds given every 2 weeks for 8 weeks and then
a third kind for 12 weeks.
She wants a port put in because of the strength and it's easier.
So here's the plan for the week if Dr. Buddy gets her way.

May 25 - tests at hospital to make sure heart okay.

May 26 - meet with Dr. Schirmer (Dr. Buddy is hoping he can repair hernia when he puts port in.)

May 27th - hopefully port and hernia surgery.

May 28th - begin first chemo treatment.

These may change if Dr. Schirmer cannot get me scheduled for surgery this week. Then we would move everything to next week or if there are problems with tests. I will try and keep you updated.

Oh - side effects of the chemos I will be receiving -
1. I will lose my hair
2. Nausea - Dr. Buddy gave me 4 or 5 prescriptions to fill
3. Fatigue

That's it for now. We're doing pretty well at this point just trying to digest all the info!

May 24, 2010

I decided to do a blog because I have so many people praying for me and I want to keep you
all updated so you know what best to pray. Thank you all so much for the cards, letter, hugs and prayers. I appreciate you all more than you will ever know.

Oncologist appointment 10:30 a.m. Angel said this appointment will take at least 2 hours so will try and have any updates posted tonight.

This a test posting for this blog!
